Jan DASH: QuantRisk-27Papers; FinanceCrises/RFT; Book2Ed; CarbonClock; ClimateEncyclo; Portal; ClimateCARO; TalksVideos

September 18th, 2018, 9:41 pm

Below are the titles of my 27 quant-risk papers posted on SSRN, based mostly on work I did with colleagues at Bloomberg when I was head risk quant.
The papers are organized by topic; the last paper that was posted is labeled #1 etc. Abstracts and full-paper downloads available free on SSRN here:
https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/cf_dev/AbsByAuth.cfm?per_id=566347 - over 2,500 downloads so far.

Two of my papers (on correlations) are available from the PRMIA Risk Library here:
https://prmia.org/Public/News/Learning_Opportunity_Risk_Library.aspx?WebsiteKey=e0a57874-c04b-476a-827d-2bbc348e6b08

A paper on financial crises and Reggeon Field Theory (RFT)  entitled The Reggeon Field Theory, Describing Financial Markets in Crises, and Predicting Crises, Geoffrey Chew Memorial Volume (World Scientific, March 2021) here https://worldscientific.com/worldscibooks/10.1142/11815 . The paper is sourced from Chapter 46 of my book and my three crises/RFT papers (below). Geoff Chew was my PhD physics advisor at UC Berkeley.

The second 2016 edition of my book Quantitative Finance and Risk Management, A Physicist's Approach, published by World Scientific, is here: https://www.worldscientific.com/worldscibooks/10.1142/9003 . The book contains theory and practical applications with case studies and quant stories, and covers risk management in Fixed income, Equities, and FX - from basic nuts-and-bolts to advanced including exotics. Model risk, systems risk, and data risk are included. The book also contains my original work in Path integrals and options, the Macro-Micro trend risk model, Advanced stressed VAR with fat-tail vols and stressed correlations, Crises and the Reggeon Field Theory, plus Psychology and models.
Finally, the 2nd edition of the book has a long chapter on Climate Change Risk Management. I believe climate change is the next risk-management frontier, with substantial job opportunities going forward.

My Bloomberg Carbon Clock paper is here: https://www.bloomberg.com/graphics/carbon-clock/  with colleagues: A Forecast for CO2 Levels is here: https://www.bloomberg.com/graphics/carbon-clock/BLOOMBERG-CARBON-CLOCK-TECHNICAL-WORKING-PAPER.pdf - the math behind the carbon clock with both a trend and seasonal CO2 oscillations uses SSA and a "wavelet".

I am the Editor of the forthcoming World Scientific Encyclopedia of Climate Change (May 2021) - for the Table of Contents see here: https://www.worldscientific.com/page/encyclopedia-of-climate-change . The World Scientific publisher page is here: https://www.worldscientific.com/worldscibooks/10.1142/11526#t=aboutBook . The Encyclopedia is based on over 100 case studies understandable to the general public, including students. The Encyclopedia focus is Climate Change and: Finance, Economics, Policy - and contains many related areas.

Here is my Climate Portal website http://climate.trunity.org/

Finally, my climate talks and docs are here: https://www.scribd.com/search?content_type=documents&page=1&query=jan%20dash&language=1 . The video of my in-depth Oct. 2020 talk at the Gabelli Business School, Fordham U., Climate Change Risk Management - Risk and Opportunity, is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tzFv32oxX5g&feature=youtu.be&t=1s  and the presentation is here: https://www.scribd.com/document/483283600/DASH-Parts123-Climate-Risk-Opportunity-Fordham-Oct2020

N.b. I retired from quant finance / risk management in March 2018, after a 30 year career.

Interesting!  is the statistical distribution in the many tests climate research is based on discussed much in The Climate Change Encyclopedia ?

" In that particular issue, we observed a misuse of significance tests in about three-quarters of the articles; a randomly selected issue published 10 years

Significance Tests in Climate ScienceAmbaum, American Meteorological Society

"We tested a recent, randomly selected issue of the Journal of Climate for at least one instance in each article of misusing a significance test to quantify the validity of some physical hypothesis. The Journal of Climate was not selected because it is prone to include such errors, but because it can safely be considered to be one of the top journals in climate science."

Climatology of Non-Gaussian Atmospheric Statistics Perron and Sura

“A common assumption in the earth sciences is the Gaussianity of data over time. “ "From the results presented here, it is evident that Gaussianity is actually quite rare in the atmosphere. In fact, for daily observations, non-Gaussian statistics are the norm and not an exception. “

"At this point, it is important to note and realize that we only have a very rudimentary physical understanding of why we see the global patterns presented here. In fact, we do not have a fully developed theory of non-Gaussian statistics in the atmosphere. "

We deal with very complex systems, and more focus should possibly be put on making more robust (adaptive) systems?

CLIMATE CARO (Climate Change Academy of Risk and Opportunity)
I believe business will develop a high demand for a new profession: Climate Change Risk and Opportunity Officers. These people will need to know traditional risk management, climate change, and various related topics. I founded a non-profit organization Climate CARO to help persuade universities to offer a MS-level degree for students to meet this upcoming demand. My paper is here:  https://www.scribd.com/document/450633237/Guidelines-for-Competencies-of-Climate-Change-Risk-and-Opportunity-Officers; my talk is here: Talk on Climate CARO

Hey Jan,

First, congratulations on this major project.

Then, an honest question. What is the business case for this encyclopedia from the publisher's point of view? Looking at the contributions, I will guess it's 1000+ pages over three volumes and will retail for many hundreds of dollars. So, is it library sales?

any chapters on consequences for students?

"The North Norwegian student dormitory in Oslo has been hit hard by high electricity prices. Now the management is asking the students to shower less."

https://www.vg.no/nyheter/innenriks/i/Xqak5o/nordnorsk-studenthjem-ber-beboerne-halvere-dusjingen

One of the nations in the world with most energy per capita. Fossil fuel in the Oil nation Norway is forbidden to used for heating (sent to the britons and germans with massive profits ) ..the gass sent out also at massive profits. We have loads of electricity, cost of production is between 0.05 and 0.20 to produce per KwH, but due to maximising export and electrifiicing everything price has been 6kr per KwH, that is about 6000% above cost of production

Old wood stoves outlawed in more and more towns.

What is the chapter on risk of rapid green change?

Have you ever held lectures for stinking students? luckily covid, can give lectures over Zooom to not smell the green-shift

wow story gets worse, Norwegian top politicians have made a deal for themselves: to pay Zero for electricity, while students cannot afford to shower due to sky high electricity prices (export to give rest of world our clean water fall power). But these politicians are saving the rest of the world, just not their own citizens!

Interesting stuff in my view, as it shows rapid change based on populism without thoughtful strategy is perhaps not the smartest way to solve the world challenges?

There is indeed climate policy risk, corrupt politicians taking from the people and giving to themselves is one of these risks...of course phrasing themselves as the saviours of the world!

My chapter - The Reggeon Field Theory, Describing Financial Markets in Crises, and Predicting Crises - in Geoff Chew's memorial book is now published (Dec. 2021), see:
https://worldscientific.com/doi/10.1142/9789811219832_0015

Abstract:
The RFT was used in physics to describe high-energy diffraction scattering. Later an empirical relation between the critical RFT and behavior inside financial crises for diverse markets was discovered, with no arbitrary parameters. A method using scaling exponents was used to obtain probabilities of future equity crises, with success much better than chance. Here, I summarize this work.

IAQF & Thalesians Webinar Series: Climate Change: Opportunity and Risk
A Webinar by Jan W. Dash

  • When
    12 Apr 2022
  • 12:30 PM - 2:00 PM (EDT)
  • Location
    Zoom Webinar

Abstract:

Tens of trillions of US dollars in opportunity over time will be possible for proactive businesses of all sizes that engage in robust action on climate change. Huge capital investment and operations opportunities, transitioning with all deliberate speed from fossil fuels to renewables, will have positive impacts perhaps greater than the industrial revolution and the digital revolution.

The vision for this climate action is to conserve a livable planet for our children; a secure planetary home. The mission is for the present generation to ramp up robust climate action urgently – substantially and quickly, with opportunity – to fulfill the vision.

The alternative to increased robust climate action now is unacceptable and possibly even unmanageable future risk and damage to the human race. Risk management of climate change via targeted opportunities can be the business case for enhanced climate action.

How can business better plan for climate action? A cadre of “Climate Change Risk and Opportunity Officers”, appropriately trained with a University masters degree and employed at senior C-Suite levels in business, could act helpfully to assess climate risks and opportunities.

The talk will be an overview.
