I bless the rains down in Africa

August 31st, 2018, 8:05 pm

Hello again,

it appears an opportunity came up to work in South Africa. Other than being ummm, extra diligent, when buying a farm did any of you guys have any insights or ever happen to be there?

From what Worldbank says it seems that purchase power is roughly double nominal, so a gbp 200k package would allow a livestyle of gpb 400k? Am i scammed here?

Also some interesting rules seem to apply such ad never stop at red lights at night, private security for your house etc.

Any advice?

I was once in Zuid Afrika (Jo'burg) for a short while. I really liked the place and the people.
200K is very good IMHO. It is a nice lifestyle (Braai), Afrikaans, sun, rugby, cricket etc. But there might be hidden costs, no idea.

The usual well-documented caveats apply...

Sandton?

And Kalahari is nearby

I've been a few times, lecturing, holiday,... Lots of positives: Great weather; Great food (if you like to eat exotic creatures, the skins of which can then be made into nice boots)

Lots of negatives: Security and high fences everywhere; General air of danger in many places

And I'm still owed money by a company there.

I wouldn't live there.

Sorry to hear that. If it's any consolation, you are not the only one in this case.

In my case (my pockets are possibly less deep than those of bigger institutions and since I had no references (but I did check beforehand!)) I agreed with them to pay me 50% up front and the other 50% on day three (check with HQ) of the five-day course. Mrs. Cuchulainn usually deals with these issues before possible pre-escalation phase.

Notwithstanding, it is not a nice experience and it leaves a bad taste in the mouth.
