Part of the research today: Chickens!
My sister is likely to get some this spring - we are conferring now and plan to build a coop in her barn, with a ramp that they can use to go in and out.
Safe from bobcats, coyotes, eagles... Chickens go to roost in the late afternoon - you do not have to round them up - they will just pop right into the coop on their own.
Here is a nice list of breeds with pictures and a legend on their characteristics:
Breeds of Chickens - Murdochs
Further bonus - do you know what chickens love to munch on besides their "scratch"?
Locusts!! Well-documented too. Of course, there is the question of scale and we don't want a battalion
of chickens, but we'll see what is needed.
Nature has solutions - we just have to try to keep up.
Anyway - Buk buk buckaw
to you folks.
When I went to agricultural fairs as a child, I always like these striped ones - Barred Plymouth Rock aka "Barred Rock" - and any chickens with iridescent feathers. +1 : ) Peacocks are cool too - but if you ever heard one scream out - hehe - they are kind of crazy. Lovely plumage. but ... : Q
