How should we deal with the coronavirus pandemic?

March 15th, 2020, 7:20 pm

Get it all off your chest here! (Then the other thread can be used for modelling. And for other pandemics!)

Question is: where do we go from here?

And quants!

On the other hand, those cabin-on-lake compounds up north are looking better and better....

If mortgage rates follow, I'll expand my plan and get a couple of them!

Go vegan and rewild the planet. All those viruses are animal-borne and humans contract them by eating the animals. At the same time, we are the main vertebrate biomass on this planet - an easy hit. Unless we introduce the two changes, the viruses will continue to specialise in killing humans.

what about bats invading houses? Last summer I had a big bat flying around in my living room. My instincts was to be scared, and now I know one should indeed trust the instincts. I also had many bats in the wall of my bed room, they make a lot of noise, and had to escape to another part of the house. In Norway it is not even allowed to scare a bat. Plenty of government articles that bats are not dangerous at all, and that it is forbidden to remove them from your house, they just forgot to mention corona viruses.

Luckily they move out in the fall, and it is a big mystery still among researchers where all bats go in the winter, some hypothesizes about caves, but that dose not explain it.

City people and their vegan bat burgers !

Bats are quite visible in Norwegian skies during the summer, but scientists are not quite sure what happens to them in winter.

One day I will go completely Bat Man!

You will go mad bun :-) The bats go to warmer regions in the winter, so that the hungry Vikings don't eat them.

Fine, shut down the whole f***king world for two weeks. But at some point, you have to let people get on with their lives. Car crashes kill 37,000 each year in the US. Sure, you could prevent those by telling everyone to stop driving. Is that where we are?

Well, this will make you smile, given your previous post. ; )

CDC Recommends Suspending Gatherings Of 50 Or More People For The Next 8 Weeks - NPR March 15

"In a guidance announcement issued on Sunday, the agency said it was warning against large events and mass gatherings that include "conferences, festivals, parades, concerts, sporting events, weddings, and other types of assemblies."

The agency called on organizers, whether they are individuals or organizations, to cancel or postpone such events. However, it said the guidance did not apply to the daily operations of organizations like schools, institutes of higher learning or businesses."

As I posted elsewhere, here in the Northeast, many schools elementary through college) are closing for two weeks.

And this evening, I received word from a number of my local restaurants that they are also following guidance and closing or reducing operations to take out only for two weeks. Museums are closing too.

The restaurants are suggesting gift cards for future use to help keep things flowing and museums and arts organizations mentioning that donations will help a lot right now.

Maybe I am a contrarian, at least by UK standards, but I am on board with this.  We'll see if it works.  Keep an eye on US stats for the next 2-8 weeks.

The governor of California this afternoon "advised" that healthy 65+ year-olds self-quarantine. I suppose the mandatory badges come later.

Further note:

California, Ohio, Illinois, Massachusetts and Washington close bars and restaurants in effort to slow coronavirus - USA Today March 15

And other states are also putting restrictions into effect:

"New York City took similar action late Sunday, ordering all nightclubs, theaters and concert venues to close by Tuesday morning....Restaurants and bars in the city will also be limited to serving only takeout and delivery customers.
- Pennsylvania - all restaurants and bars across five counties (Allegheny, Bucks, Chester, Delaware and Montgomery) to close dine-in facilities to help control the spread of the virus, beginning Monday.
- Tennessee, Nashville - all bars to close on Lower Broadway, the city's epicenter of nightlife, and has severely restricted restaurant capacity
- New Orleans - all restaurants would need to close by 9 p.m., and bars and nightclubs by midnight; for all of these establishments, capacity will be limited to 50% of posted limits."

Interested in other opinions on these measures.

The car crashes will continue to kill about the same number every year. The virus has a greater potential. Something I've read recently :

The airports are having a tough time - hours long lines for screening:

Airports in the U.S. Struggle to Cope With the Crowds - Bloomberg March 15

Only 13 airports here now are accepting flights from Europe and other affected regions.
  • Boston-Logan International Airport (BOS), Massachusetts
  • Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD), Illinois
  • Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), Texas
  • Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW), Michigan
  • Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL), Hawaii
  • Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), Georgia
  • John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), New York
  • Los Angeles International Airport, (LAX), California
  • Miami International Airport (MIA), Florida
  • Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), New Jersey
  • San Francisco International Airport (SFO), California
  • Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA), Washington
  • Washington-Dulles International Airport (IAD), Virginia
Not the best time to fly the friendly skies.
