I hate the way people are standing six feet away from each other but aren't acknowledging this. It feels very rude.

I think there are going to more mental health issues with this virus/isolation than there ever were with world wars.

Cannes Film Festival in May *and* F1 racing have been postponed.

But it is possible to see many films that won awards at Cannes in the past - so you can create your own retrospective.

Festival de Cannes announcement and also wonderful archives here.

and if you prefer, lots of racing videos here Formula 1

Have a good weekend, folks.

Thanks for the links trackstar. Pretty calm here in tx, people innovating/coming together in small groups to have community/conduct business and just generally get on with life. Feels a little like hurricane season. The gallic gods of SLB have dictated we continue to work at home, and after week one I have to say it's growing on me. A wonderful weekend to yall as well.

Agreed! Maybe a reflection of what I think the author of 'risk' expresses, or perhaps a dan airely/malcolm galdwell type - we've never been better off nor more paranoid/fearful

I see a different side - I am not above hanging out on Twitter with what some of you would call "idiots" and I call "a wildly diverse set of people" - and I have friends who are active on FaceBook.  Some people are scared, paranoid, depressed, and others are showing great spirit - reflective, innovative, and humorous approaches.  And these groups interact....which creates a kind of (healthy?) equilibrium.

Also sometimes memes get rolling and can be quite entertaining. Case in point - a "do-it-yourself bidet" theme has emerged - some people just go out and buy the real thing at Home Depot or wherever, but others are fashioning their own toilet enhancements with shower nozzles or garden hoses, and duct tape, etc.  It's pretty funny and lots of commentary back and forth on best practices etc.

As far as 6 feet distance and non-acknowledgement goes, that may be the British way - pretend the awkward thing does not exist?

Here people are saying hello - wary, but laughing as we navigate the right distance, and sometimes striking up little conversations. This is definitely not normal - here in the suburbs, a neutral demeanor or wrapped up in your own head/iPhone has been the norm for many years.

So, maybe I have rose-colored glasses (and a rose-colored bidet to match!), but I see some positives in behavior and community around here.

Now just hope the curve flattener hypothesis works.

The most bizarre thing is that it will be socially distanced homeless on the US streets who will repopulate the Earth.

I guess we'll just have to see (and gallows humor indeed).

But if you have looked at that population closely in NYC or San Francisco, for example, (two cities I know well), you would know that many of the homeless are Vietnam or Gulf War vets, elderly, released from asylums when that went into vogue a few decades ago, and/or alcoholics and addicts.  So...not blaming the victims here and would hope for a better social support system, but as it stands now, the shelters are even more dangerous than the streets and so they stay outside. Whole different problem, but I did see some video from one city where the homeless were being shuttled away on a bus to keep them off the street for CV lock down. Scary images, but hopefully food and a cot in a safer place.

The north of my country will not let in people from South without quarantine them. The government now lifted this ban, but north refuses to accept it. Countries against countries, North against South (I am in south), and I guess sooner or later East against West.

Think if all people had been sensible farmers, living on their own farms and only meet other people in the spring and fall festival to mate. Then we would not had such crisis in the first place!

It seems like extensive testing of all people is a solution, then quarantine everyone testing positive. Test every week. The test is just a cotton swab in your mouth. Yes it would require extensive testing facilities, could be in the food stores.  Must be a rapid test! Rich small towns can possibly do this already? then just build a wall with guarded entrance, like in the movies kind off.

Could be ready for second wave (if any second wave). This would keep society function almost normal.

Cuch, have you taken advantage of the early-morning shopping for us oldies? It's fascinating! I'm going around thinking, "Do I look like that? Jeez!" And every now and then I see someone quite fit, so it's, "No, that's me. Hardly stooping at all. And the grey is quite distinguished."

And we can take our carers!

My nanny does the shopping for me. I am not allowed out.

I wanted to go to the Turkish barber last week. By the time this is over I will look like Richard Harris in Harry Potter or some movie, w/o receding hairline.

I've stopped shaving as well.

Why not say you can go to the beach if your surname begins with, say, W to Z?

(Excluding Wu..., Xi..., Yu,..., Zh...)
