I'm not usually a fan of the don, but I like the cut of his jib this week. I'm still scratching my head as to why we had to upend the world markets for something that has yet to be as deadly as the various maladies the underdeveloped world face day in / day out. +1 tho for working under dressed by the faint glow of the laptop, stiegl in hand while I watch my wife and little son play on the porch and the polaris pool cleaner work hypnotically.

There do seem to be two schools of thought on this topic:

A) Economics >> People => Possible extinction of human race

B) People >> Economics => Possible depression

I exaggerate, I hope!

I think it's worth going with Option B for a few weeks!

Sounds like you are in paradise. We had one day of discipline, school work, etc. Now chaos. Little son trying to destroy all computer, printer, tech equipment. I hear screaming now from somewhere outside. Screaming is a good sign, children still alive. Stress headache. Eating old rice and blue cheese...what??? Only relief is making a list of people who I hope catch corona.

People are doing things only because of anxiety. How many people are able to just do nothing? It's just too scary for them.

I have been thinking about the problem of screaming children and angry spouses.  I have no experience with this, but had an idea.  See if it is helpful.

Designate one room of the house to be the Calm room.  Weave some mystery around it.

Put some nice things there on a table by themselves - chocolate, a toy or two, something that your spouse will recognize and value (but not breakable or contentious).

People are allowed, even encouraged to go to the Calm Room from time to time.

But you have to be calm *before* entering there - you have a grip already.

No screaming, fighting, or crying.  See what you think. If it works, how long does the calming effect last?

Now you have a new science project to work on too!

Today I am sewing patches on six pairs of jeans - they have been stacked in a  pile for a long time. They are in very good shape, but all wear out in the same place - funny. I guess that is because of my lovely gamma.  He he. : )

And finally a song for you - don't forget, you may be able to modify child, spouse, and/or significant other behavior through skillful selection of music too.

Dancing in the Dark - Diana Krall

Joao Gilberto & Stan Getz -Mostly Bossa Nova Full Album (1963)

I'm going for a retro bossa nova groove today. Smokey loves it.

I wouldn't advise chocolate - it's 600 kcal / 100g. Better jogging or family exercise.

As for children - Japanese-style upbringing. We had it at home. I remember I was taught to stack dishes in the cupboard carefully not to make any clanking noise. Western kids are too spoilt by their parents.

I've waited hours for this
I've made myself so sick
I wish I'd stayed asleep today
I never thought this day would end
I never thought tonight could ever be
This close to me
Just try to see in the dark
Just try to make it work
To feel the fear before you're here
I make the shapes come much too close
I pull my eyes out
Hold my breath and wait until I shake
But if I had your faith
Then I could make it safe and clean
If only I was sure
That my head on the door was a dream

I've waited hours for this
I've made myself so sick
I wish I'd stayed asleep today
I never thought this day would end
I never thought tonight could ever be
This close to me
But if I had your face
Then I could make it safe and clean
Oh, if only I was sure
That my head on the door was a dream

I recommend .Kung Lao fatalities in old Mortal Kombat. They could add a new character to commemorate the pandemics - Corona.

Cheesecake Factory can’t make April payments to landlords. It feels like very few businesses put aside cash for rainy days. (British understatement.)

But I can assure readers that Wilmott.com can weather this storm! (As long as there’s an internet.)

Japanese upbringing is not good for kids

https://www.sbs.com.au/news/judo-deaths ... se-parents

Netherlands is a good place to bring up kids, all in all.

"First of all, many judo instructors at Japanese schools are too ignorant about what to do when a serious incident occurs," he told AFP.
Our judo club received a high-level delegation from Japan to explain to them how to treat kids on the judo mat.

It's not obvious either way.
Our societies are complex systems, and seems we at least run the risk of over allocating to slowing the virus without a cost/benefit to that. Non trivial, but would be nice to see some of that being done, or at least a nod to it..
Or as Paul says, maybe that's just heartless!

We are taking chances with:

1. Economy (and thus lives) by prioritising lives

2. Lives by prioritising the economy

3. Live by trying out cures before all the usual testing

But what I haven't seen yet is taking chances with reinfection. I.e. Give those who are recovered a certificate, stamp in passport, badge (although these have connotations!) so that they can go about their normal business.
