Looking Ahead: 2022

November 24th, 2021, 7:38 pm

A few things coming out from the kiln recently:

Raku ware, Fall 2021

Taxed, untaxed
Vaxxed, unvaxxed
Minned and Maxxed...
spread the bets across the covid board?

Good health and happy holidays, everyone, whatever path(s) you have chosen.

Oh, Places to Go and Things to Know

Congratulations, Wilmotters!
Today is your day.
Escape to Great Places!
Head off and away!

You have Pfizer in pocket.
Moderna in shoes.
You can vax yourself
Whenever and wherever you choose.
And if you’re not sure, just for good measure
You can take J&J now, or next day, at your leisure!

You'll look over the stats. Look them over with care.
About some you will say, "I don't choose to go there."
With the risks and dark downside clearly in mind,
You might say aversion, or “I’m just not that blind.”

You may not find any
Vax you will try,
Although friends will yell at you
And strangers will pry.

Head out of town
To the wild open spaces.
It's freer out there
And you’ll leave fewer traces!

In the forest it’s fresh
You can breathe and be true
To your thoughts and your feelings
‘bout the Covid-vax Zoo.

So, walk on those trails,
Watch the river, it flows!
Don’t listen to bear-bulls
Trust your wandering
Wilderness toes.

To all here the best;
No harm, just for fun.
Salut and farewell
from my place in the Sun!

A little parody with appreciation for Dr. Seuss and all my Forum "friends" whatever your current "status" is. : )

Different tangent - the racing scene is alive and well, in spite of everything.

So, some useful navigation and planning tools for those who are idling in the Pacific region, in particular. ; )

Nautical charts and racing notices to peruse.

An icy night here, so a few things while I stay warm by the fireplace.

A fragment of a recent scarf - the yarn is supersoft merino wool and lustrous colors.

Also - a cookbook - some great but rather time-consuming recipes here.  Tomorrow I will make a Smoked Paprika & Cheese Sourdough Bread.
Highly recommended!

Then, another Hogwarts contender for Marsden to consider - but maybe this math/philosophy book will get some respect. ; )

and finally, a brainteaser, below. I found a little cache of these and they look promising...

Paul and others who might attempt it, you can tell me if it was a good one or a boring one...

I like it.

If there's some known method for thinking about such problems, it's unknown to me.

The one thing I note is that j(n+1,h)=[j(n,h)+n] mod h.

Not sure if that is a step toward solution or not.

Good that it is of interest. I stumbled across a little journal that has these "Advanced Problems" as a regular feature.

Since people mailed their answers in in the pre-Internet days (imagine!), there can be quite a lag between the publication of the problem and the solution.

In this case, #478 was published in August 1993 and the solution is presented here in November 1994, see "String Along" starting on page 4.

ADVANCED PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS Edited by Raymond E. Whitney

and here is the Journal: The Fibonacci Quarterly Issues from 1963 to the present are available in pdf.  A treasure trove of papers and brainteasers I think, maybe a Perfect Solution to mid-winter boredom. ; ). Hope you guys enjoy them.

Peeked at the solution, so I'll say little more.

But I will give one hint: Archimedes, as we know, figured out how to find the volume of a solid by seeing how much liquid it would displace. He also did a lot of other clever things ... some of which were apparently developed with the help of his displacement cleverness. So he would cast standard shapes and find their volume ... and then with a few samples of the same shape in different sizes, he would figure out a formula that would match the volumes to, e.g., the radius.

In other words, sometimes -- and maybe most of the time with a "define the set of all solutions" problems -- it's a good idea to find a few solutions, see what pattern they fit ... and then back into a proof.

Which I suspect is how at least some of the people who solved this puzzle did it.

Norway removed restrictions, including the requirement of travel quarantine, while Poland is going through the fifth wave (ICU still reserved for potential covid patients and many occupied by children). I’m fearing it’s not the end :-(

Given the recent statistics for new incidents, hospitalization and deaths in Norway, the timing is kind of funny (and not in a ha-ha sense).

Watching Russia, Nord Stream II, pandemic news, we missed Valentine's Day here.

So, belatedly, one of my favorite deserts: Gulab Jamun from India.

I've been collecting various recipes recently and will test them out in the next few weeks.

Best when the dough is light and airy, browned to perfection, and soaked in rosewater/honey/saffron syrup.

Peace out. : )

Wow - very nice! They look almost identical to my pan fried Malaysian cuttlefish balls. And a belated happy Valentine’s Day!

Official FIDE Grand Prix 2022 Series through April 4.

No Metaverse for me, but Chessverse from time to time...

Next major holiday for us here on the Forum would be St Patrick's Day.

Til then, good luck and keep on truckin'. ; )

Demo of attachment deletion.

I posted a picture of a scarf and two books a few posts back on February 6; in a moment, those photos will be gone.

Attendez... ; )

Done.  So, just a bit of OCD silliness here, but as one of the people who used to add, subtract, embellish with photos ad infinitum - I have explored the work arounds and there may be a few I haven't thought of yet.
Like putting every post in as an attachment. :D

But anyway, here is a photo I will leave behind today.  It's cold here, but feels like spring is around the corner.

Wait - did you also subtract one of Cuch’s posts? He is down to 64,999.
