Very sad. A good man and key player that saw the world to the end of the Cold War and the victory over Communism of Capitalism. It was never a done deal until it happened.

QuoteOur thoughts also turn today to the twenty years in which the Holy See and the United States have enjoyed formal diplomatic relations, established in 1984 under President Reagan. These relations have promoted mutual understanding on great issues of common interest and practical cooperation in different areas. I send my regards to President Reagan and to Mrs. Reagan, who is so attentive to him in his illness. I would also like to express my esteem for all the Representatives of the United States to the Holy See, together with my appreciation for the competence, sensitivity and great commitment with which they have favored the development of our relations.Pope John Paul II meeting with George W Bush on Friday, June 4th, 2004

I was not a fan at the time, but not one of his harsh critics either. I thought he was asleep at the helm for some of his second term, but he was a lot smarter than he appeared to be. I realized only later how much he recast the previoius approaches to the Soviets and to government spending in the U.S. I was oblivious then to the fact that sharply rising defense spending in the US was, in some large part, designed to bankrupt the competing Soviets, which it did, thank God. I'm not sure about his fiscal policy philosophy, but breaking the mindless trend of ever larger government was not a bad thing then, even if it has had limited success in practice. He may even deserve most of the credits being heaped upon him now.

Let's not forget what Reagan's tax cuts did to federal revenues:1980 517.1 billion1981 599.31982 617.81983 600.61984 666.61985 734.11986 769.11987 854.11988 909.11989 990.71990 1090.5And why? Because poor people became rich, and started paying taxes, when the government stopped printing money and using it to buy solar panels. But it's so evil to borrow money from Japanese savers at 0%, when we could simply confiscate from Unites States businessmen, isn't it?P.S. Here is revenues versus "defense" spending, 1981 through 1989:599 134618 158601 185667 210734 227769 253854 273909 282991 290Not hard to, um, see, how... not joining the USSR... created a trillion dollar debt?!?

It's hilarious that, to this day, you still have parrots reciting that "Star Wars" was evil and wrong.Of course the Soviets hated it, of course the Cubans hated it. But it's just funny that you still have people reciting "i-t d-o-e-s-n-'-t w-o-r-k" like some kind of comedic robot drones from a 1970's science-fiction movie. And they have no idea why, or who programmed them to say these things. For crying out loud, his master is long dead, and the dog is still rolling over at the table. Not even Gorbachev clings to these old snippets of propaganda. It's like in "Planet of the Apes" when they're getting those lost fragments of radio transmissions from a distant time.Reagan simply thought that the existing options - first-strike, passive destruction, retaliation, and mutually-assured destruiction - left something to be desired.

The left wing opposition to Star Wars went something like this...Star Wars won't work.By working, it will destabilise the world and we'll all die.The Russians SDI is for peaceful purposes only.Few lefties have studied logic.SDI is exactly the military strategy that suits the USA. Hi tech high price warfare is good for a rich, technological state. The Russians had good technology but far far less money. No one else had enough of either. Reagan ensured the dominance of the USA for at least 50 years after his leadership.

DCFC: The Russians had good technology but far far less money. How is launching Nuclear (fission?) missles at incoming ICBMs over your own cities (Moscow SDI) "good technology"?

How is launching Nuclear (fission?) missles at incoming ICBMs over your own cities (Moscow SDI) "good technology"? Well I meant in general, they were up there in launch vehicles, lasers, particle beams et al.Using off the shelf reliable componnents is a rational way to deal with a hard problem. Fallout is better than impact. Also this technique would work just as well defending silos in mostly uninhabited Siberia. It's cheap, would probably work, sounds better than many Western military technologies.Personally, I think nukes are the way to go. Hitting even a dumb ballistic missile has turned out be very very hard.Nukes give you a bigger radius.Add in simple avoidance techniques, dummy warheads et al, and anti missile missiles look a bit sad.Beam weapons in general have the problem that they don't get on well with the atmosphere, so a serious attack on the USA would be best done with depressed trajectories to keep in lower thicker atmosphere. These are a lot harder to do, and would mean much more expensive launch vehicles.

Actually, Russian defense scientists concluded firmly that SDI would work given adequate time and investment. It was publicly denied, but as they say "we can tell it now".
