since breast implants were mentioned, bra was patented in 20th century, so was liposuction, decaf, fat-free milk, sugar substitutes, exstacy, prosac and viagra, not talking of the push-thru tab on cans.how about TV, computer, electronic microscope, nuclear reactions, insulin and penicillin?Actually not. Most important invention was cloning.

I was thinking this morning that the laser was huge. They use to be large and bulky. Now everyone has one in their CD player and microsurgery has opened up because of its invention. The transistor was also huge. I remember when my two transistor radio was outdated by the six transistor radios with better reception. Then they had 12 transistor radios. Then they stopped counting! (how many millions of transistors on a CPU now?)Shannon and Weaver's The Mathematical Theory of Communication was huge, perhaps the most important paper ever in electrical engineering. It revolutionized our codebreaking and made possible the modem (and by extension the Internet). It dealt with easy ways to guarantee message delivery in a noisy channel, no matter what. Stop bits, parity bits. Revolutionized genetics as well, helping to teach us how DNA can code proteins effectively in a turbulent environment, free from error.Matthew

QuoteOriginally posted by: JMRI wonder why no one mentioned the mobile phone.everybody has one and we can barely live without itWe were all waiting for you to mention it, and hate starting with the obvious Reasons I would be reluctant to say the mobile phone include the number of times I have nearly been hit by the car of someone using one, memories of getting interrupted by calls at odd times, and the reduction in peace in places it has led to in some places. My portable e-mail devices certainly get higher marks.
