Yes, perhaps I should have added "brevity" and "interpretability".  :)

On a different note, you have probably heard of the "Paperclip Apocalypse" also relevant for communicating with machines and understanding where they might go with something...

The belief in brevity is a curious human trait that has given us Twitter and Trump.

What if some things are simply complex and that nothing shorter than a terabyte can explain them?

We already have a "Paperclip Apocalypse" in the form of all the rampant cellulose synthesizers on the planet.

A attempt to restore profundity to this thread through an alternative form of quotation:

Some day soon we will be able to ask a chess-playing computer what it is thinking as it makes its moves.
It's thinking about its next moves :-)

Well, when some one asks "What are you thinking?", there is some kind of happy medium between a billion page answer and 140 characters including spaces. :)

And to close with two brief quotes:

“You can prove anything you want by coldly logical reason---if you pick the proper postulates.”

― Issac Asimov, I, Robot

but also:

“It's your fiction that interests me. Your studies of the interplay of human motives and emotion.”

― Isaac
Asimov, I, Robot

K - yes, hehe.  Whenever some one used to ask me what I was thinking, that is what I would say.

Maybe and maybe not.

I was thinking of all the handwringing going on over whether the makers of self-driving cars could ever fully explain how one of their cars makes all it's decisions. And if they can't explain that, then how can we trust these AI systems? Yet no human driver could pass this standard either so maybe they should not be allowed to drive.

In the context of chess, a human player might be able to briefly describe some of their thinking on the top 2 or 3 movement sequences they were considering but that leaves out 99.999999% of the far more interesting thought processes by which they ruled out the other 2 or 3 billion movement sequences that were possible.

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”

Guess who said that?

If it is of any help, Hitler did not say that (mind you, you are close).

Is that a profound quote as well?

The quote seems to be widely attributed to Goebbels, with some doubt around the exact context.

Probably after the long jump final at the 1936 Olympic Games.
