It's a Fallout boy, as in "I like to play Fallout". Men use female avatars (from manga, games, etc.) too. In old Guild Wars there was an overrepresentation of female elementalists among male gamers, because the avatar apparently had the biggest breasts...
Anyway, I don't see any problem with the fact that those women weren't real. They fulfilled those men's emotional needs probably better than a real woman would be ready to do. It's a bit like in Spike Jonze's movie "Her". BTW, long ago I dated a system admin who set up a job in crontab (at the main server at his workplace) to send to me love emails every hour. It was sweet and it was a good relationship, but later I decided to make an upgrade so to speak.
