Re: Harvard University: Seat of Dumbness

you're trying to create a smokescreen, by showing that harvard discriminates in favor of the offspring of alumni and faculty as well as against asians.
The difference would be that discriminating against asians is against the law.
The big losers because of legacies are non-legacy whites

There are also large set-asides for athletes, who are disproportionately african-american. The Ivy League may not have athletic scholarships, but they do give the admissions office a list of athletes whom they would like admitted

Then-Senator Hubert Humphrey, who went on to become LBJ's VP and the 1968 nominee ("Dump the Hump"), famously said of the 1964 Civil Rights Act,

The Hump's promises notwithstanding, the 1964 Civil Rights Act did lead to quotas, even if they were not in the text.
We as a society have to decide what racial equality means.
Does it mean that we have quotas and racial set-asides at schools like Harvard?
Or does it mean that we are race-blind and a black student and an asian student (and even a white student) with the same grades and the same extra-curriculars have the same likelhood of getting into a school like Harvard, because that sure as heck isn't the case right now.

Instead, we have the absurd situation where Senator Pocahontas had to lie and pretend to be Native American to get a job at Harvard. Two wrongs don't make a right, Pocahontas.

It's 55 years since Martin Luther King, Jr, gave  that speech at the Lincoln Memorial, and yet schools like Harvard continue to judge applicants by the color of their skin rather than by the content of their character.
“The content of their character” is so vague as to be utterly unmeasurable, and thus totally open to manipulation.
It was a speech not a piece of legislation!
Indeed. I was not the one trying to use it as the basis for admissions policy.

news from the trial (Students for Fair Admissions v Harvard)
Harvard: Race can only help, never harm, applicants’ chances
The suit says Asian-American applicants bring stronger academic records than any other race, yet they are admitted at the lowest rate. The group says that’s because Harvard consistently gives them low scores on the personal rating, which, according to a document revealed by the group Monday, is only loosely defined in Harvard policies.
(snip)
William Lee, a lawyer for the school and a member of its governing board, said race is just one of many factors that can work in favor of an applicant, getting no more weight than a student’s geography or family income.
“Race alone is never the reason a student is granted admission,” Lee said. “And race is never the reason a student is denied.”
admissions is in a sense a zero-sum game, so the headline "Race can only help, never harm, applicants’ chances" can't be true. If you decide to admit one more member of group X, then you have to admit one fewer member of group not X.

Hard to argue with that

Internal documents found that Harvard sent recruitment letters to students based on how they scored on the PSAT, but the thresholds were different depending upon an applicant’s race, according to WSJ. Students are twice as likely to get into the school if they qualified for such letters.
Asian-American men in a recent admissions year received recruitment letters if they scored at least 1380 out of 1520 points on the PSAT and Asian-American women received letters if they scored at least a 1350, according to WSJ. Black, Hispanic and American Indian applicants, however, received letters if they scored at least 1100. White applicants from 20 underrepresented states like Nevada received a letter if they scored at least a 1310.

According to internal statistics, Asian-Americans would make up 43 percent of the Harvard class if the only admissions metric were academic scores. For the admissions year in question, the admitted class was only 19 percent Asian-American.
Would that really be so terrible?
