if you read the first volume of Manchester's biography of Churchill (p470 in the copy here), in 1911 the Ottomans sounded out Britain about an alliance, and Churchill (in Manchester's words) "with the arrogance of his class in that time, had replied that they had ideas above their station," along with a bunch of other insults.
After Churchill wouldn't let the Turks take possession of the Dreadnoughts they had paid for, Germany and Turkey signed a secret alliance on 2 August, 1914. A lot of those secret alliances going around
There was a cult of Churchill among the neocons circa Gulf War Part Deux. Evil dictators like Saddam Hussein were compared to Hitler and those who opposed wars against those dictators were appeasers. That neocon mentality persists today.
Among his many attributes, Churchill was a white supremacist, and I thought white supremacists were bad.
According to Harold McMillan (a subsequent British prime minister), during the 1955 election Churchill remarked that "’Keep England White’ is a good slogan."
On another occasion, he is reported to have said, "I hate Indians. They are a beastly people with a beastly religion"
And countless other appalling quotes.
