Believe it or not, Churchill got a Nobel prize in Literature.

The Nobel Prize in Literature 1953 was awarded to Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill "for his mastery of historical and biographical description as well as for brilliant oratory in defending exalted human values."

But that was before the rules changed to only allow Latin Americans to win.

A bit like the Euro song contest when Latvia, Israel and Ukraine win every year.

I was expecting William Trevor to receive the accolade but too late now.

Churchill's wit of course was legendary [/i][/font]
I never found him witty. Not even at Gallopoli nor El Alamein.
Only 1 thing worse than being witty..

That quote is also attributed to Shaw (GBS) and Wilde.
Both said it?
GBS, maybe
quote investigator
There's a lot of people saying he had said it, but no original source.
Wilde, sort of: this is from The Canterville Ghost
Indeed, in many respects, she was quite English, and was an excellent example of the fact that we have really everything in common with America nowadays, except, of course, language.

  • It is a misfortune for Anglo-American friendship that the two countries are supposed to have a common language. A Frenchman in America is not expected to talk like an American, but an Englishman speaking his mother tongue is thought to be affected and giving himself airs. Or else he is taken for a German or a Dutchman, and is complimented on his grammatical mastery of the language of another nation.
Upper-class Dutch people tend to affect an Oxford accent when speaking English.

Given the recent scandals in the prize committee, maybe it's for the better.

To be fair, the EU sent their A team and we sent our reserve youth team.

It could have been worse.

You could hardly give him the peace prize.

UK advertising watchdog to crack down on sexist stereotypes
Ads will no longer be allowed to depict men and women in gender-stereotypical roles
No doubt brits can look forward to ads featuring boys playing with dolls and men sporting ligerie

Interestingly, this is all done (and directly paid for) by UK industry. No social engineering by government going on here.

I like the idea (especially of men in lace lingerie). I just don't understand what the ad of that blonde nice girl has to do with that.

My guess is that The Guardian is in the business of selling newspapers (and the internet equivalent) and a picture of a nice girl in a bikini sells more than most.
