Jerry Falwell, RIP

May 16th, 2007, 1:07 pm

God called a good and dear friend of mine, the Reverend Jerry Falwell, home yesterday.QuoteJerry ran with a gang of juvenile delinquents before becoming a born-again Christian at 19. He turned down an offer to play professional baseball and transferred from Lynchburg College to Baptist Bible College in Springfield, Mo."My heart was burning to serve Christ," he once said in an interview. "I knew nothing would ever be the same again."The church that Jerry started in an abandoned bottling plant in 1956 grew into a religious empire that included the 22,000-member Thomas Road Baptist Church, the "Old Time Gospel Hour" carried on television stations around the country and 7,700-student Liberty University, which began as Lynchburg Baptist College in 1971. He built Christian elementary schools, homes for unwed mothers and a home for alcoholics. "Jerry has been a tower of strength on many of the moral issues which have confronted our nation," Pat Robertson said Tuesday. "“I join the students, faculty and staff of Liberty University and Americans of all faiths in mourning the loss of Reverend Jerry Falwell. Dr. Falwell was a man of distinguished accomplishment who devoted his life to serving his faith and country," Senator McCain said. "Jerry was the seminal figure in bringing evangelical and fundamentalist Christians out of the catacombs and energizing them into a political voting bloc that helped elect Ronald Reagan twice and was responsible for a lot of Republican success after that," said Cal Thomas, syndicated columnist and vice president of the Moral Majority from 1980-85.Jerry survived a 2002 fatwa by Iranian cleric Mohsen Mojtahed Shabestari calling for his death.

QuoteTraffic stopped in Baghdad's main streets and squares Wednesday as Iraqis observed a moment of silence to mark a new national day of remembrance for the victim's of Saddam Hussein's regime who were buried in mass graves. The Iraqi government declared May 16 as Mass Grave Day to commemorate the day when the first such grave was uncovered near the Shiite town of Mahaweel, about 56 kilometers (35 miles) south of Baghdad.Human rights organizations estimate that more than 300,000 people, mainly Kurds and Shiite Muslims, were killed and buried in mass graves before Saddam was overthrown by U.S. forces in 2003."It is a lesson that we will never forget," Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said. "We want to build a civilized society in which humanity is respected."Cars and pedestrians stopped in place at noon, while policemen and Iraqi soldiers conducted a military salute.During a conference held to commemorate the somber day, al-Maliki described the graves as one of "the ugly crimes" of Saddam's regime and drew a parallel with the current daily attacks against Iraqis."The criminals are the same. In the past, they created the mass graves. Today, they explode, kill and behead innocent people," he said.

Bush ignored warnings on Iraq insurgency threat before invasionThe Bush administration disregarded intelligence reports two months before the invasion of Iraq which warned that a war could unleash a violent insurgency and rising anti-US sentiment in the Middle East, it emerged yesterday. The warning, delivered in two classified reports to the White House in January 2003, was prepared by the National Intelligence Council, the same advisory board that warned the Bush administration last month that the violence in Iraq could descend into a civil war. That forecast radically departs from George Bush's upbeat assertions that the situation is improving in Iraq, and he initially dismissed the assessment as a "guess".The White House spokesman, Scott McClellan, suggested the assessment was the work of "handwringers".
