Mexico says round-the-world cyclists were murdered
Mexican investigators say two European cyclists did not die in an accident as first claimed - they were murdered.
The bodies of Holger Hagenbusch, from Germany, and Krzysztof Chmielewski, from Poland, were found at the bottom of a cliff in Chiapas state.
Local authorities had said the pair appeared to have fallen after losing control.
(snip)
"The Polish cyclist was decapitated and had a foot missing," he wrote on Facebook.
(snip)
Chmielewski sustained a head injury that may be a gunshot wound, said Mr Sánchez.
I'm surprised the mexican authorities didn't call it a murder-suicide

Mexico's Lopez Obrador Wins Presidential Vote as Rivals Concede
the far-left candidate who has been likened to Hugo Chavez  won with a plurality but not a majority of the vote.
It was his 3rd run: they have 6-year terms in mexico and he ran in 2006 and 2012 as well, losing by a hair in 2006 when he refused to concede
López Obrador resigned the Mexico City headship in July 2005 to enter the 2006 presidential election, representing the Coalition for the Good of All, which was led by the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) and included the Citizens' Movement party and the Labor Party. He received 35.31% of the vote and lost by 0.58%. López Obrador subsequently alleged electoral fraud and refused to concede, leading a several-months-long takeover of Paseo de la Reforma and the Zocalo in protest.
evidently he held a swearing-in ceremony where his supporters proclaimed him as "Legitimate President of Mexico" and he appointed a "Cabinet of Denunciation"

Mexico’s Next President Plans His Own Border Police Force
"We’re going to create a border police force that will be highly specialized," Durazo said in an interview. "They need to apply the law," including stopping undocumented migrants and human traffickers from crossing into Mexico, which Durazo says often takes place with the help of corrupt officials.

Severe drought WAS to blame for the collapse of the Mayan civilisation 1,200 years ago: Scientists prove theory for the first time after analysing water from Mexico's Lake Chichancanab

scientists found a 50 percent decrease in annual precipitation over more than 100 years, from 800 to 1,000 A.D. At times, the study shows, the decrease was as much as 70 percent.
That period is around the start of the medieval warm period

It would be interesting to know - I mean for the sake of survival of modern America - whether Mayan political leaders were climate change denialists.

It would also be interesting to know - I mean for the sake of survival of modern America - whether Mayan political leaders realized that it was just natural variability or whether they thought that they (or their gods) caused it.
It would kind of suck if they killed a few hundred thousand people to appease the gods when it was just natural variability

We used to have long discussions about the medieval warm period here. Most of the warmers deny the existence of the medieval warm period, and as you say denial is more than a river in Egypt.
When the warmers draw their temperature graphs, they almost always ignore the medieval warm period, and sometimes even start from the trough of the little ice age.

The lesson to be learned from the medieval warm period and the mayans, and indeed past warm periods such as the Roman warm period and the minoan warm period, is that so-called global warming is a regular cyclic phenomenon on planet Earth.

Fair enough.  By the same token, there was this Economist article  The rise and the rainfall of the Roman empire, few days ago.

tarantula tacos
evidently the issue isn't the obvious one (they're eating spiders) but rather that tarantulas are protected

Mexico new president vows to end 'rapacious' elite in first speech
Veteran leftist Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador took office as Mexican president on Saturday, vowing to see off a "rapacious" elite in a country struggling with corruption, chronic poverty and gang violence on the doorstep of the United States.
Backed by a gigantic Mexican flag, the 65-year-old took the oath of office in the lower house of Congress, pledging to bring about a "radical" rebirth of Mexico to overturn what he called a disastrous legacy of decades of "neo-liberal" governments.
"The government will no longer be a committee at the service of a rapacious minority," said the new president, who is often nicknamed AMLO. Nor would the government, he said, be a "simple facilitator of pillaging, as it has been." Lopez Obrador later addressed a massive crowd of supporters in the heart of the capital, promising to put Mexico's sizeable indigenous minority first in his drive to root out inequality.
A major challenge facing the new leader is managing relations with Mexico's top trading partner, the United States, after repeated broadsides by President Donald Trump against Mexico over illegal immigrants crossing the U.S. border.
Lopez Obrador repeated he was seeking to contain migration through a deal with Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to foster development in Central America and Mexico.
I'm wondering whether he's cut from the same cloth as Chavez/Maduro in Venezuela and Evo Morales in Bolivia.
