Medellin brings to my mind only one thing - hippos! Did you know that you owe the introduction of hippopotamus to Colombia to Pablo Escobar? He transported the whole zoo of exotic animals to his hacienda near Bogotá to entertain his son. The animals escaped after he was arrested, and the hippos adapted pretty well to Colombiana muy caliente
That f*cker had his own zoo at the Villa Nápoles. If my memory doesn't fail me there must be now about 80 hippos in the area, all offsprings of Escobar's specimens. They have started to sterilize them recently. But it is slow as it is led by local non profit organizations and overlooked by authorities (like so many things...). The thing is that the hippos provoke radical changes to environment e.g. some local species living in rivers are now being endangered because of hippo poo (if you needed some technical details on the situation there). No kidding.
BTW Medellin -ciudad de la eterna primavera- is much more than Escobar's hippos (which don't live in the city anyways!). The Botero Museum, the new library, the Jardín Botánico, the Cerro El Volador, nightlife in Laureles and El Poblado, the Metrocable, the escalators in the Communal 13 (I think there are ones of the longest in the World), feria de los flores every year, simply have a great time at some random bar discussing with locals (paisas -the people living in Antioquia- are super friendly and have a refreshing positive mindset), or enjoying outdoor activities in the surroundings, etc ...
