To be honest, I don’t really care much for or about European soccer, but I still find the Super League proposal somewhat offensive. It is highly reminiscent of the ISSL story from 1972, but at least that was nominally meant to allow the athletes to make some money. That failed pretty spectacularly, and cut short the career of some speed skaters (sorry - should probably have put that in context), including the great Ard Schenk. I’m all in favor of banning the breakaway teams and players from other sanctioned competitions. That way they will be more Harlem Globetrotters than NBA. It is undoubtedly too late to limit the control of US private equity and middle eastern sheiks over top premier league teams, but that doesn’t mean that they need to be allowed to play in said league.
