the internet is up in arms about this racist cartoon

a lot of people have asked why osaka, who is half-japanese and half-haitian, and 2 inches taller than serena, has been drawn as a tiny white girl with blond hair

Martina Navratilova has a helpful op-ed piece in the NYT today, going through some of the details of what happened and relevant history. She does not condone Serena’s lack of respect for the game and her opponent, which sounds about right to me.

Does France sell armament to Serbia?
I'm trying to figure out whether the Novax gate is relevant from my home country's perspective.

They signed a contract to purchase Mistral anti-aircraft missiles and launchers a couple of years ago.

Also following the recent aborted submarine deal with Australia, this is game, set and match Serbia according to the French referee!

I haven’t read the details but how was Novax going to be able to play if he hadn’t caught Covid in December?

By “caught Covid” I mean “had a positive test result.”

Well, he did catch it in his personal mass-spreader tennis event back in 2020. And he is on record stating that a focused mind can purify polluted water, so he might have thought he had a faith based exemption. He is also apparently not very good with paper work. I’d cut him some slack on the last point if he had been some 17 year old prodigy finding himself suddenly thrown onto the world stage, but that excuse ran out a rather long time ago. But he may just have turned into enough of a national hero and martyr that Serbian police may choose not to pursue him over his domestic quarantine (or isolation?) infractions.

I mean, did anyone ask him what he would have done if he didn’t have a positive test?

“I would have been vaccinated.”

“I would not have played.”

“I would have got an exemption on the grounds of…”

Is there any answer that is believable?

Totally unrelated, but out of 50, approx, tests in my close family we’ve had one false positive.
