Mary Midgley, British moral philosopher and writer. Her work is an important part of foundations of animal rights and liberation movements. (It's also a good read for everyone.)

maybe name the royal baby "willow" as a tribute?
was that one of paul's picks?
Queen's last corgi dies, ending her 74 year connection with the breed

Paul Allen (Microsoft co- founder) died this month. He was probably less known to you as a marine life conservationist.

RIP
I  believe he also bankrolled Burt Rutan's Spaceship One (which won the Ansari X-Prize in 2004 for becoming the first privately funded spacecraft to enter the realm of space twice within a two-week period and then the British guy Branson took it over and pretended he was behind it)

From left to right: Paul Allen, Ric Weiland and Bill Gates

That someone with Gates' choice in hairstyle could become one of the world's richest entrepreneurs means
there is hope for everyone.

Speaking of hair styles (and my egocentric self), I've stopped straightening my hair: https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/ ... e=5C43A2DD
In a few more washes it will go very curly and I'll look like a walking cultural appropriation, which these days makes one worse than a deceptive vulture capitalist scheming to take control over the world.

At home they called me strzyga because of this hair. It's a common demon which raises from a dying homeless child, stealing the last breath of its soul, and kills adults to drink their blood and eat their flesh. When you try to kill it, it takes the form of the child and begs for life - you hesitate for a moment and you're dead. It can also change into an owl and fly away to escape death. Those who played The Witcher must know them, but where I lived we had them all real.

thanks, I've fixed the Boston Herald link

Whitey Bulger was a very bad man. The son of a man murdered by Bulger summed it up:
"He will be getting a pitchfork in the ass from the devil now," said Donahue. "His (expletive) legacy is gone. We can finally put him behind us."
But it also appears to be the case that he was murdered in a federal prison,
Bulger arrived at USP Hazelton yesterday. He was found unresponsive at 8:20 this morning, according to a statement from the Bureau of Prisons, which provided no other details.
(snip)
According to multiple reports, Bulger was murdered by inmates with ties to the mob. His death is being investigated as a homicide, officials confirmed.
The Herald reported last week he had been relocated from a penitentiary in Florida to one in Oklahoma, which often serves as a temporary stop for inmates in transit.
If I were the FBI, I'd be looking long and hard at what role (if any) the bureau of prisons and doj had in his murder.
He was killed within hours of arriving at Hazleton, so chances are it was planned before he arrived and the murderer(s) knew when he was arriving and where he would be.
Did someone engineer a situation in which he could be killed? If so, they're as guilty as the person who killed Bulger.
Why was he being transferred? And why was he being transferred to Hazleton in particular?

According to wiki,
Bulger was the brother of William Bulger, former President of the Massachusetts Senate. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Bulger served as a confidential informant for the FBI beginning in 1975, a claim Bulger denied. However, as a result, the FBI largely ignored his organization in exchange for information about the inner workings of the rival Italian-American Patriarca crime family. Beginning in 1997, the media exposed criminal actions by federal, state, and local law enforcement officials tied to Bulger. For the FBI especially, this caused great embarrassment.

Murdered wheelchair-bound mob boss Whitey Bulger, 89, was 'wheeled away from security cameras by three inmates with mafia ties before they beat him to death with a lock in a sock and tried to gouge his eyes out'
Boston gangster James ‘Whitey’ Bulger Jr. has been killed behind bars shortly after he was transferred to a federal prison in West Virginia. He was 89.
Bulger was found dead overnight on Tuesday at USP Hazelton, a high-security prison with an adjacent minimum security satellite camp in Bruceton Mills.
It emerged in Bulger’s 2013 trial that he had served as an FBI informant as far back as 1975, though he always denied the claim.
Law enforcement sources tell DailyMail.com that Whitey had been talking about outing people in the FBI – people in the top echelon of the informant program.
The sources said he hadn’t even been processed at the West Virginia facility when he was killed. But someone who knew he was being transferred put the word out – the killer had to know he was coming.
maybe the FBI aren't the best people to investigate this

Re: RIP

here's some more background from the Boston Globe
You need to enter an email address to read it, and (unless you want a lifetime of spam from the Boston Globe) I'd search for "disposable email" and use an email address from one of those sites

The FBI had a policy of getting the Italian mafia at all costs, and made a Faustian deal with Whitey Bulger, who by all accounts was far worse than the Italian mafia.
Albano was messing with the FBI’s national policy of going after the Mafia and the Mafia alone. That was the justification the FBI gave for making deals with devils like Whitey Bulger and his partner in crime, Stevie Flemmi. They were supposedly giving up their pals in the Mafia. The problem with the FBI’s national policy is that it didn’t take into account that the most vicious, murderous gangsters in Boston were Whitey Bulger and Stevie Flemmi.
They specifically discuss four men from the Italian mafia who were framed by the FBI for a gangland killing by an associate of Bulger
In 2001, the four men convicted of Teddy Deegan’s murder were exonerated. Turned out the FBI let them take the rap to protect one of their informants, a killer named Vincent “Jimmy’’ Flemmi, who just happened to be the brother of their other rat, Stevie Flemmi. Thanks to the FBI’s corruption, taxpayers got stuck with the $100 million bill for compensating the framed men, two of whom, Greco and Tameleo, died in prison.
The Globe talked to someone on the state parole board who had considered paroling the four men
Albano was appalled that, later that same year, Mueller was appointed FBI director, because it was Mueller, first as an assistant US attorney then as the acting US attorney in Boston, who wrote letters to the parole and pardons board throughout the 1980s opposing clemency for the four men framed by FBI lies.
Of course, Mueller was also in that position while Whitey Bulger was helping the FBI cart off his criminal competitors even as he buried bodies in shallow graves along the Neponset.
“Before he gets that extension,’’ Mike Albano said, “somebody in the Senate or House needs to ask him why the US Attorney’s office he led let the FBI protect Whitey Bulger.’’
Incidentally, Albano, who had been on the parole board, became mayor of Springfield MA in 1995 (in the west of the state, one of the old mill towns) and his administration was subjected to extra special scrutiny by the FBI, he claims as revenge for his role on the parole board

After Albano was elected mayor of Springfield in 1995, he soon found the FBI hot on his tail, investigating his administration for corruption. The FBI took down several people in his administration, and Albano is convinced that the FBI wasn’t interested in public integrity as much as in publicly humiliating him because he dared to defy them.
