Technical quotes

March 25th, 2016, 7:48 am

The inventor's paradox is a phenomenon that occurs in seeking a solution to a given problem. Instead of solving a specific type of problem, which would seem intuitively easier, it can be easier to solve a more general problem, which covers the specifics of the sought after solution.

Technical quotes

QuoteI'm running an up-to-date operating system, and I switched to C++ 11 as soon as it became viable. I can do that because I'm an individual. Organizations move more slowly, and the bigger they are, the slower they move. It wouldn't surprise at all to see Visual C++ 6.0 still being used. Wikipedia even says, "Visual C++ 6.0 is still quite popular".From Boost mailing list.

The NREL researchers used the optical Stark effect to remove the degeneracy of the excitonic spin states within the perovskite sample.

"Women struck by lightening do not carry electric charge, so it is safe to touch them, and indeed it is imperative to do so in order to administer CPR."

Might be different depending on the quality and source of the lightning though.

Think of all those reindeer recently - 300 killed by one blow (bolt) from Thor.

I think it was too late for CPR then.  :D

From now on I'm always going to lift my wife above my head during lighting storms. The screaming is not pretty but if she's a good insulator then that's what counts.

Some years ago I built a portable theoretical Faraday cage, which has protected me from 99.9% of the "bolts from the blue."

This gives me great comfort and security most of the time.

That .1% can be truly shocking though!  :D

Perhaps you could build a similar apparatus and avoid the screaming.

I like to travel light, I'm not going to carry a faraday cage around all day. It needs to be a McGyver type of solution, use the stuff that lying around you.

Dont you ever think "I need to remember these DIY tricks in case I ever need it?". Not just that wifes are good insulators, but also things like how to open a can without a can opener, or even how to fold a shirt in just 2 seconds.

Ah, but you are lacking a certain level of conceptual and abstract thinking.

What do you think a "portable theoretical Faraday cage" is made of and how is it constructed?

And when I refer to "bolts from the blue", what do I really mean?

Are women suffering from lightning strikes revived by CPR, by a kind touch, or by the steady (but temporary) diversion of subatomic particles from one flow to another by an external force?

The average human has 1.5-2 sq m of skin and thin aluminum foil is only 6 microns thick.
You can make a Faraday cage that's only 32 grams and it can save your life!

No gaps here.  Just a continuous flow of my own personalized atoms flowing through time towards the inevitable end point and then perhaps continuing on in a new configuration.  Hope I will meet you again - and we can laugh over three quarks for Muster Mark!

My atoms do not slow down for Polish officers, in uniform or otherwise.  :D

That was a UV thing!
