Obviously you use a metaphor - "take the American economy hostage" - because there is no actual thing in reality which you are talking about. You live in a cartoon. It is perfectly understandable what he means: the refusal by the GOP to raise the debt ceiling.Yes. It not even some kind of secret, but when Obama won in 2008 the GOP came together and essentially decided that in order to win next time they would make sure that Obama failed. That strategy worked quite well in 2010, so they doubled down. And then they lost. The funniest part of that story is that they essentially spent a billion dollars telling everybody how Obama is like the biggest loser ever, the worst president in history, a guy that cannot get anything done, a person without any sense or any accomplishments. And then they lost against this horribly bad president. So even with all their might, and all their money, in the biggest financial crisis "ever" with the worst sitting president "of all time" they still lose. Big. Almost every single state. The popular vote. Turnout. Everything. Now there is this sense in the GOP that in order for them to win Obama has to lose. That's obviously true if you simply look at individual races but it's absolutely possible to get things done together. For example in Germany there are essentially two large parties (Merkel's conservatives and Democratic Socialists) which tend to get around 35% of the vote each, and in addition several smaller parties (liberals, greens, extreme left etc.) who tend to get between 5-10%. In order to rule a coalition has to form. In 2005 no big party - small party coalition worked out so the two big parties got their shit together, formed a "grand coalition" and rule Germany quite successfully.I think the GOP needs to realize that now is the time to actually work together as well. Cause they tried vilifying Obama, in fact their platform embraced nut-jobs like Trump, and they tried simply blocking everything and it did not translate into a victory. They also tried extremist positions, e.g. Akin and Mourdoch, and both lost decisively.
