how are quantum computers coming along?

I see Quantum used as buzzwords in many fields

My vague impression is that quantum computing is like controlled nuclear fusion for power -- ten years off and always will be. :D

LASER is quantum (stimulated emission/electron transitions between quantised energy levels)
Staying at Einstein, all sorts of detectors and other devices using photoelectric effect
Esaki diode is quantum (tunnelling) BTW, I've met Leo Esaki! IMHO, he's the humblest and truest of true scientists. Those species are almost extinct there days.
D-Wave is a quantum annealer
...

Quantum physics has always been there. So were impostors.

A long time ago I worked on p-n junction simulation

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%E2%80%93n_junction

Would it be feasible w/o QM?

The other way around! Majority of the effects I listed wouldn't be feasible w/o p-n junctions :-)

BTW, I forgot to mention my fav quantum device, SQUID. I was never allowed to touch it, and preferably not let into the lab - or even the whole lab level of the institute building, because of the suspicious correlation between the device failures and my visits. Oh, and I once launched the fire alarm in the clean room. It was really strange. As if they knew that I didn't believe in the measurements they showed to us. That they were just designed to show what we wanted to see. Little physicists discovering their own biases... Gollum! Gollum!

chicken or egg?

The exponentially fitted method I invented for parabolic PDE in 1977 (e.g. BS) is similar to fitting in semiconductor fitting.

Then it becomes time-dependent, inter alia

We make the science of what we see, and if we measure something new (a discovery) with devices which operate on our science, is it the truth - would we measure something else if the science which led us there was different?
Part of QM effects is due to Kolmogorovian probability theory not applying to some classes of phenomena. (Kpt has problems of its own, as it may happen when someone has an ambition to merge different mathematical models of reality - in this case, two distinct older theories of probability, ensemble and frequentist.) If we didn't have this Kpt (but another or several other theories of probability), would we have QM? Hmm...

I've heard that quantum "computers" are getting popular in finance (quantum annealing in optimisation problems) - true or not? It offers quantum speedup (N^2 vs classical N), because of ballistic transport (vs classical diffusive). So at least there you do Hadamard walk.

Anyway, I expected to hear about open quantum systems. Leela fell asleep from boredom. You people don't know what's good.

Oddly, I was just flipping through some lecture notes on that very topic this afternoon (quantum annealing applied to finance, that is). Dr ML de Prado has it covered.

And, by the way, Leela looks very comfy.

Quantum telepathy! No joking, it exists. I'm wondering if Schelling's focal point, which is 100% classical, cannot be understood as quantum telepathy... but I'm wondering about too many strange things.

Coordination equilibria are interesting. I once took a class with John Harsanyi, but that only taught me how much I don’t know about game theory.

If you are looking for an understanding of Finnegan’s Wake, then I would recommend gaining at least basic knowledge about quantum theory and Einstein’s relativities before you begin, considering Joyce attempted to separate time and space in that work.

I have it separated in my mind too. Sometimes I remember a place but not sure when I was there. Sometimes I know I was somewhere, but can't remember anything about it. Years ago ISayMoo and I went for a mountain trip, which I got completely erased from my memory shortly after returning from it. I kept staring at my photos from the trip in disbelief that I ever was there. When asked by people if I ever visited those mountains, I always say no. Funny and creepy at the same time.
