In some circles maybe the same thing .People contributed fivers and tenners on a regular basis all over the country. It was to feed the families of strikers because the union had insufficient money for strike pay. I am quite sure that striking miners would have greatly appreciated anything that came from the Kremlin without it making any difference to their opinion of the internal politics of the SU.But the fact that Thatcher was turning the UK into a giant US nuclear base was another hot issue at the time which I am quite sure had a major impact on the SU's decision to help the miners.

Haha! I toyed with adding something like that. Or something about finally learning a lesson when no one comes to dig you out, etc.P

QuoteOriginally posted by: Traden4AlphaAnd they often demand that the government to pay people to dig such holes.Should the private sector pay instead?Ask for volunteers?Conquer a neighboring country and have your new slaves dig the holes?(Don't bother conquering France in that case - short work week and naps after lunch, even pour les esclaves!)**Or change the paradigm - not digging a hole, but walking a tightrope with no safety net underneath. If and when you fall, who should cover the expenses?

In the UK the Conservatives are often called the "Nasty Party." I always thought this was very wide of the mark, very unfair. I think that Conservatives are just honest, and understand how the world works. They don't pull any punches. And are a hell of a lot more fun to go partying with than Labour (The Bitter and Twisted Party) or LibDems ("Hullo clouds, hullo sky")! P

PThis past winter, I watched a show from the British TV series House of Cards (Streaming on-demand from NetFlix)Ian Richardson as lead character, Francis Urquhart, a Conservative Chief Whip who becomes PM after much treachery.Thatcher era pilloried - Black humor - very funny.

PYes, Conservatives are just honest, and understand how the world works. Liberals are also honest, and wish the world worked differently. One side lets natural greed accomplish too much and the other side lets it accomplish too little. Perhaps Liberals are more humane, but Conservatives are more human.

And I see even more who imagine they see it when they find themselves unable to say anything useful and turn to ridicule as an evasion.

In any case, RIP to the Iron Lady.Without the Conservative Party, we would not have the Sex Pistols. For every action, an equal and opposite reaction...God Save the Queen
