a paper that got lot of media headlines like from BBC

Alternative cancer therapies linked to reduced survival

The study was heavily flawed and abuse of statistics. It was recently criticized by the Scandinavian trio in The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) oncology

Methodology Flaws and Implications of a Complementary Medicine Study

Excellent critics I must say, only they were too mild in their critics.  The critics by the Scandinavian trio seems to be supported by Ana Muñoz van den Eynde, that also question the research ethics of the medical paper in question.

Two are genuinely methodological, whereas the third is more related with the ethics of research

It's a pity that the rebuttals' authors scientific culture made them put their comments behind a pay-wall.

just climb under the wall!  or jump over....(for example by visiting a good library)

ohh I see even more researchers agree with The Scandinavian Trio on that the paper in question was of very low quality

There are 2 major methodological issues that challenge the validity of this study.
Linda E. Carlson, PhD, RPsych; Ting Bao, MD, DABMA, MS; Lynda G. Balneaves, RN, PhD

" rendering the study results invalid"

that something is published in a good journal is clearly no guarantee for that the work is quality...  may be they should consider withdraw the flawed paper.

Looks like it was like total of like 4 comments/letters in the same issue pointing out the many flaws of the paper.

Where were those people when the paper was undergoing the review?

A common problem in this kind of research is background context. For instance, no sane person would suspect that yoga is bad for the patients' health (as the criticised paper seems to suggest), but if one considers data on health indicators of people who train yoga vs. those who spend their time watching telly, it may turn out that the zen guys are worse off. The missing link is why those people trained yoga in the first place, and it's sometimes related to negative factors in their lives (stress, depression, etc.). Again, it's obviously not a rule, but one should consider such relations in the causal model discovery process.

There is no reason to loose flexibility with age, every morning start the day with legs behind your head.

Gut feeling: study links depression to digestive bacteria
as people have said before, if you run enough correlations you'll come up with something. Maybe depression causes digestive bacteria.

Association of Accelerometer-Measured Light-Intensity Physical Activity With Brain Volume

Question  Is light-intensity physical activity associated with brain volume?
Findings  In this community-based cohort study of 2354 participants, each additional hour spent in light-intensity physical activity was associated with larger brain volume, equivalent to approximately 1.1 years less brain aging. Achieving 10 000 or more steps per day was associated with higher brain volume compared with those achieving fewer than 5000 steps per day.
Meaning  Incremental physical activity, even at a more practical light intensity, may be involved in the maintenance of brain structures into older age.

So, folks, ...
(Your bums, not the derivative benchmarks.)

It's not scientific, but from my experience the auditory cortex massage is the best stress therapy:

First hint that body’s ‘biological age’ can be reversed: https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586- ... 2-42087411
"But scientists caution that the findings are preliminary because the trial was small and did not include a control group."

And yet it was published in Nature. Vivat science! :-)
