Empathy

QuoteOriginally posted by: PaulA young soldier was hacked to death in Woolwich this week. There has been some discussion in the Off Topic Forum about this. But rather than show empathy for the man's family and friends, that discussion has descended into yet another ping-pong match of abuseThat's just life. Ever read "Canterbury Tales" or "A Theory of Moral Sentiments"?I expect to suffer something much worse every time I get on my motorcycle and head out for a cheeseburger. If a 2x4 falls off a pickup in an intersection, and I hit it while looking into the mirror from the left lane in the middle of a two-lane left turn, I will do a high-side wipeout and a car will roll over me. If I don't die, I will be paralyzed with mangled limbs. If trucker gets a text message, he will swipe me and rip off my leg. I will die in pain as my blood drains on the pavement to the sound of sirens.

I got 33 out of 36. Apparently this test sucks, because I feel no empathy, sympathy or any other emotion towards this soldier. Perhaps because I live in the US and have no personal connection, or maybe because I am too logical, and like t4a, think of all the poor souls who have died from less extreme random acts who will get no attention. The only thing that seems to cause a rise in me these days is violence against children. This has started ever since I had kids of my own, and can't help imagining them in awful situations when I hear the stories in the news. But I am sure it will pass in time.

Tell me, Paul - what's the relation between the Woolwich murder and our capability to read the body language of others?Social intelligence has nothing to do with compassion. Compassion - this is the proper word, not 'empathy' especially in the scientific meaning.

If people were genuinely saddened by these events, then they would be living in a state of constant depression because this type of stuff is on TV News everyday. Don't people ever get numbed by this type of news. For me personally, the saddest day of my life was when my dog died.

My cat Boris died a few years ago; he was 16 years of age and he was my son's constant companion. We buried Boris in the garden.

I know this pic (it was in the years 1992-3), but was unable to find it out on the internet. Anyway, I didn't know she also worked as a stripper.

I got 25 out of 36.And, I had the following message : "The average result for adult population is 26 out of 36." , as everyone else it seems.I'm not sure whether it is a plus not being English-native.It's easy for Communication science (for constructivists) to argue this test is worthless.Besides, I agree with Paul that those getting a quite high mark to this test are more likely to find it 'better' than those who performed poorly.

So from what is given:Baffled - not reallyDistrustful - I guess, but she looks happier than that.

Hmm, i got 29. I am quite certain i got most of the chicks wrong. Their faces were all young, very attractive, and with ton of makep -- all of them said pretty much the same thing to me -- they clearly looked like they tried to hide that they were dying to go to bed with me. I just put random quesses there.
