Good question for you. Not a lot of people know this. What was the original PURPOSE of Kung Fu and the other martial arts? WHY were they developed? The answer is very interesting and not what one might expect: Buddhist monks in old China were very often traveling teachers (it was a side job). They tought reading and maths. Now, they had a (big) problem traveling from village to village down the long trails thru forests: They were often attacked by bandits. So, the monks had to defend themselves. Notice how this makes perfect sense if you think about the qualities of the martial arts:(1) Primarily defensive (you just want a bandet to GO AWAY, you DO NOT want to kill him usually. If he will just go away, you are happy.)(2) An individual skill (the martial arts are not about "Formation" or "Column" combat. They ar about YOU, one man)(3) Using only what one man has in physical ability and what small weapons he can carry (a staff, stars). After all, you were just one monk walking in the woods. You only had your hands, feet, a staff, and what you could carry in a bag. There are no TANKS and CANNONS in the martial arts. It's not about that.
