I hear guys who are left-wing arguing such stupid positions, I wonder what is wrong with them. Economist Thomas Sowell has attributed it to vanity: Why would someone choose a hallucination, over reality? Because it confers a special state of grace on someone who imagines himself as morally superior. Eric Hoffer attributed it to boring lives, and the need to participate in something. In other words, the same reason many people attach their emotions to sports teams. Hoffer pointed out that someone who helps the needy, for example, can be more in need of someone to help to feel better, than the needy person is in need of help. But I have come up with three basic reasons:1) Envy, or the king-minimization strategy. The more people there are doing well, whether rich businessmen or whatever, the smaller the average left-wing guy feels. In a world of all peasants and only one king, there is less comparison between yourself and the king, and fewer people to be jealous of.2) A disposition to prefer conscious organization and group participation. A left-wing guy is often a people person, a socially oriented guy who likes to be in on or dictate a consensus, and participate in the events of the day. If his neighbors have a problem with break-ins, he has an urge to come together and talk about a collective solution rather than individual self defense. And rather than shoot the criminals doing the break-ins, he wants to talk to them and bring them into the consensus also. If there were 10 people in a cafeteria, each sitting alone at one of 10 tables enjoying himself, he would try to bring them together to sit at one table. Centrally planned economies, and rehabilitated criminals, are both unrealistic and myopic ideas. But they appeal to some people's basic makeup. Suppressing individual autonomy, and usurping spheres of individual freedom, gives them pleasure. Because they are not used to being left out of things that are not their business.3) Simple parroting. People who are good at college, who are good at learning, can't help but reproduce whatever concepts their left-wing college professors design for them. If they are told 5x5=26, the best students will get it right on a test.
