I cashed a cheque in Dublin yesterday for the first time since the 1970s, Show them a cheque in a Dutch bank and they think you're bonkers.

In the old days banks charged 20 florins for handling costs for cheques. EU law put an end to that carry on . God bless the EU.

Olaf Falafel wins best joke from Edinburgh festival award

"I keep randomly shouting out 'broccoli' and 'cauliflower' - I think I might have florets."

I think it says more about the Fringe audience than about the joke. That joke would be considered below average in a Xmas cracker.

The two worst books ever are Fountainhead and Hitchhiker's Guide. And everything by E. Waugh. And Morrissey's autobigraphy.

A couple of days ago on Flytoget I saw a young likely Norwegian guy reading Fountainhead. Is it bad enough to make him kill 70 people, enroll at the University of Oslo and live happily ever after on taxpayers' money?

Amongst the worst books ever are... But I disagree on Douglas Adams. While his plot lines may sometimes have been a little convoluted, I find that his creativity and mastery of language make his books pretty enduring.

Could you date a person with vastly different political views from you? I don't think I could now. (Setting aside how my wife would feel about it.) Up until maybe mid Blair I could. Prior to that I often didn't know much about gfs' political leanings. Ditto friends. I had no clue about how they voted. But now I know about most people. And it makes relationships harder.

I suspect that in my years as a postdoc I was the only conservative among a bunch of socialists. And where are they now? Actually they are all, well 90%, in exactly the same places, doing exactly the same research, still sponging off the taxpayer, just with less hair. (There's another rant in there, I might follow up with.)

I wouldn't have dated a labourite even when I voted them.
I don't like people with strong political sentiments. A perfect date? Someone for whom politics is not much more than an inspiration for a good joke.

They don’t exist anymore.

It’s like religion. There are believers and there are atheists. There used to be Church of England.

It depends on the date. If she is liberal arts major you can ask if she has read Ulysses (never mention politcs), or failing that, Baudelaire. If Polish, NEVER throw asparagus on the Vartican; it's a show-stopper.

I think religion is still more problematic, but there has certainly been convergence. I could in principle see dating someone who would vote for a different party than me (even out of only two choices) if we were broadly in agreement on what is good and what is bad in the world, and the different political leanings arise from putting different weights on things. I myself have drifted from moderately conservative to moderately liberal over the years without seriously changing my opinions on any particularly significant questions. All of that being said, dating a Trump supporter would be difficult, unless we are using “dating” in a strictly euphemistic fashion.

I am sure there is evidence that Trump supporters “date” the best. Aren’t Conservatives better looking than Labour voters? They certainly smile a lot more.

Right-wing people are more proactive. Left wing just lie there and moan. And not in the good way.
