How do you cope with the loneliness of the long-distance runner?

“You should think about nobody and go your own way, not on a course marked out for you by people holding mugs of water and bottles of iodine in case you fall and cut yourself so that they can pick you up - even if you want to stay where you are - and get you moving again.”

Volha Mazuronak wins marathon despite nosebleed
The Belarusian, 29, finished ahead of France's Clemence Calvin and the Czech Republic's Eva Vrabcova Nyvltova.
Mazuronak won the title in a time of two hours 26.22 minutes
no doubt a side effect of some medication

Are you suspecting some shameful practice?
The French runner was running a marathon for the first time ever.

congrats to the french runner on her debut
Yes, I'm suspicious and I'm surprised that possibility (a side-effect of doping) wasn't discussed in the story
the last time I had nosebleeds (which was many many years ago and nowhere near as bad as in the photos of the belarusian) I was taking advil (ibprofen) and it was evidently a side-effect

Could you get more information on Mazuronak’s bleeding nose, please?

that's not normal
Volha Mazuronak survived a horrendous nose bleed and a wrong turn at the finish to win a thrilling European Championship women’s marathon.
The 29-year-old from Belarus was looking comfortable in the lead group when her face was suddenly covered in blood just after 30 minutes into the race. It initially looked as if someone had thrown paint into her face and on her hands, but it turned out that it was a nose bleed.

But not for ultra-runner Alex O’Shea. The fireman who hails from Co Cork has decided to run a whopping 32 marathons in 32 counties in just 16 days.

As I will be running unofficial marathons and travelling the country, we will look at using parks and tracks, with the option for people to join me along the way.
there's also the issue of what is a "marathon."
To me, it's a RACE of 26 miles 385 yards
Definition of marathon
1 : a footrace run on an open course usually of 26 miles 385 yards (42.2 kilometers); broadly : a long-distance race
Going out and running 26 miles 385 yards by yourself is a training run, not a race.
An "unofficial marathon" is a training run, not a race.
This guy is not running 32 marathons in 16 days, he's doing 2 training runs a day for 16 days.

I know people trying to run a marathon in every state, and there's at least one club for such people
50 States Marathon Club
although why you'd send them $20 each year escapes me.
Their rules are that it has to be a real race, not just you running 26 miles 385 yards in the park by yourself

Kenya’s Eliud Kipchoge set a new world marathon record in Berlin  of 2:01:40
Dennis Kimetto set the old record of 2:02:57 in 2014, also in the Berlin marathon.

the "marathon general matters" and "Running Free" threads seem to have been merged
(I searched for one, clicked on a post, and ended up in the other)
Today is the New York City marathon. Anyone doing it?

9:20 a.m. Professional Women
9:50 a.m. Wave 1 (including Professional Men)
10:15 a.m.,10:40 a.m., 11:00 a.m. subsequent waves

No idea when "Elite" men and women became "Professional"
