Is there any recent example of a ferry or cruise ship sinking, and the life boats being used effectively? The first thing you notice, in this recent Korean ferry thing, like with the Italian cruise ship, is that the boat tilts so that half the life boats are not anywhere you would want to go, and the other half are inoperable. When the boat tipped over, I noticed it had a very shallow draft. Like only a few feet under water. Just looking at a weekend sailboat, or at the ark in "Noah" it seems ballast is important to keeping a ship upright. I would not even row to Picnic Island on a boat which it is possible to tip over and not right itself. Is it possible these boats are designed by idiots?I know they want to save gas, or nobody will ride them at all. Is it reasonable for a person on the Internet to second-guess their design choices?

QuoteThe Mayflower lay in New Plymouth harbor through the winter of 1620-1. On April 5/15, 1621 the Mayflower, her empty hold ballasted with stones from the Plymouth Harbor shore, set sail for England.

QuoteIs it possible these boats are designed by idiots?Everyone knows those giant cruise boats are safe only provided everything is OK onboard.I mean how to manage (care) a 1000, 2000 or 3000 crowd of panicked and untrained people in emergency situations?

They seem to be saying it sank because he turned too hard. The ship must have some rudder. Then again, it doesn't have much of a keel. Some boats like that will spin naturally. If there is weight, force, or momentum unbalanced on one side of the center of drag. But I know of none that sink when they do.It is really amazing to even entertain the idea this craft was not seaworthy. But if there were a hole or a rock, divers or someone would have mentioned it by now. And the charges against the captain seem hard to misinterpret:Quote"Mr. Lee is charged with causing the Sewol ship to sink by failing to slow down while sailing the narrow route and making (a) turn excessively," prosecutor Lee Bong-chang told the semi-official Yonhap news agency. It seems like this captain is getting a raw deal. He was assigned to a self-sinking barge, and is being blamed when it sank.

It is worth mentioning that Air France also sank because of poor design. Specifically, it seems the input of the controls from the two pilots was averaged. One can think of a simple case where one tries to fly left around an obstacle, while the other tries to fly right, so that they crash straight into it. The actual case was one where it seemed to both pilots they had lost control of the plane, and could not make sense of its movements.

Maybe not designed by idiots, but modified by rational people.QuoteKim Yong-rok, an opposition lawmaker who represents Jindo, an island near where the ship sank, told CNN that modifications to add 117 more passenger cabins to the ship raised the ferry's center of gravity.

QuoteOriginally posted by: ppauperSouth Korean PM resigns over government response to ferry disasterI think this is irresponsible. He is only increasing, and making more durable, the misery of the living, by making an official statement for the record that something more could have been done. They don't want small revenge. They want to believe the deaths were quick and random, and nothing could have been done to change it.

From wikipedia, an exact number:QuoteKim Gill-soo (Korean: 김길&#49688, a professor of maritime transport technological department in the Korea Maritime University argued that the addition of extra passenger cabins on the third, fourth and fifth decks was the main cause behind the accident. He argued that the addition caused the center of gravity to shift 51 centimetres (1.67 ft) higher and that forces from inside and outside were the cause of the incident, not the sudden turn.[15][48][49] Detained crew members told investigators that the ship was unstable and difficult to steer. While the renovations were approved as meeting safety standards, prosecutors are investigating whether the renovations actually did and if there were further modifications that weren't part of the approved renovations.[50]

They do drink, but it seems to be in moderation. Most drink, but I haven't met anyone who I thought had a drinking problem. Like all thinks Korean, they value balance and good measure. In fact, you get the impression that South Korea is rather prudish: Gambling is illegal, porn is illegal, drugs illegal (seriously illegal, do not even think about it. A Korean musician was recently arrested for smoking a joint while he was IN AMERICA.) Interestingly, sex toys are not illegal, and there are sex toy shops around. But absolutely no pornography.
