The call for peaceful dialog only makes sense to the extent that the Spanish government & EU have something to offer (besides threats) that would entice the Catalonians to stay.

Unless the leaders of nations (and larger entities such as the EU) can articulate the advantages of membership (rather than mere legalistic or paternalist prohibitions against departure), states and unions are bound to break apart.

I don't think EU is the issue, just yet, if you know your history.
Have you read Orwell?

Burmese days, Spanish days, working days, holidays / holy days, no difference. Tyranny is everywhere.

Probably two more than the average!
Actually, I read all of Orwell's book and have forgotten them all. And no regrets.

It is said that "Those who do not know history are doomed to repeat it."

But those do do know history do go on and on and on and on...about it.

We are doomed either way if you ask me.

My man in Barcelona says:

1. that the foreign media (I think he means non Spanish, whatever) don't understand the situation
2. that there are gangs causing trouble, trying to wind up the police *
3. that Barcelona was very quiet at the weekend **
4. it's reminiscent of Germany in 1933. ***

Notes:
* In the photos I've seen many seem to be wearing skirts and/or very small. I'd assumed they were women and/or children. But perhaps they are just midget thugs in drag. Cunning.
** He lives in a castle. I think being quiet and cut off from the marauding hordes is sort of the point of a castle. Hey ho.
*** People seem to say this an awful lot. And they aren't referring to Cabaret. I look at the weeds around the edge of my paddock and I think "Damn, this is like Germany in 1933."
