You stop short of saying "cult," but this old thread is relevant too.

Is quant finance the new Cargo cult?

From the first post there, here is the entry in Wikipedia: Cargo cult

"A cargo cult is a millenarian movement first described in Melanesia which encompasses a range of practices and occurs in the wake of contact with more technologically advanced societies."

What are some of the new cults these days? - Not just technology or science in general; now we have AI/ML, Block chain, Data Science, all the way out to Dark Matter.  Powerful cults indeed!

Maybe DM would not exactly bring wealth and prosperity, (so not classic cargo cult fodder), but its role in the search for a G.U.T. might be a cult of its own.

Quasi negative probabilities are around the corner.

Haha - well that sort of thing requires a fair amount of thought.

It's not even easy to articulate what q-n-p means, except for maybe a small elite.

I think cargo cults need to have a simplistic mass appeal and straightforward ideology although the rituals could be elaborate.

"There are airplanes and if we build runways, we will get rich." Is a classic example - build it and they will come.

If you would help define a q-n-p we can see what could be developed around it though.

I will just leave it open; imagine I am trying to explain this to the random guy sitting next to me at my favorite cafe-bar: QNP

Is it the probability that something stated will not happen: e.g. It is 90 degrees out today so the probability of snow is not only close to zero; it actually ventures into negative territory, if only for emphasis.

Or maybe it is the probability that the opposite of the stated event or instance will happen.

The probability that there is any such thing as a perfect relationship is quasi negative.

I have read a few things, of course, but a firm foundation needs clear definitions.

Or not, but then you enter the world of belief and, as you say... :D

I'm trying to be nice to ppauper.

At a certain stage words are not enough. I hope I am as supple as Mifune at his age :D Amazing speed!

there seem to be a lot of cargo cults in the west as well.
"There are tourists and if we build xyz, we will get rich." Does that count as a cargo cult or not? It seems to be the same logic

Now, now - that is a way of taking a shot without taking a shot.

Let's keep it to a higher level - not ad hominem. :D

And lest you think that I am content with overly simplistic or wrong explanations (horrors!), here are the threads with negative probabilit*.* in the title.

negative probabilities (short 2 pages long)

negative transition probability (12 pages long, more or less tailored to a specific discussion of negative probs. in finance with some OT-style digressions)

negative probability (4 pages, with a good number of references to papers and deeper thinking)

Clearly, it can get quite sophisticated, but think back to the man at the bar with some degree of curiosity about it; where can we start the discussion with him?

To make it sexier - there is this: how to become a quasi-probabilist  although it may require our common man to become proficient with Malliavin probability and integration.

Good luck with that!  But I guess that is what bar napkins are for. :)

Who's with me in declaring war on the Republic of Užupis? I expect casualties to be minimal. The pen is mightier than the sword, but no one said anything about badger-hair paint brushes.

Selection of provisions from their Constitution.  Could be the foundation of a Magna Carta for the OT.

  1. Everyone may be independent.
  2. Everyone is responsible for their freedom.
  3. Everyone has the right to be misunderstood.
  4. Everyone has the right to be individual.
  5. Everyone has the right to have no rights.
  6. Everyone has the right to not to be afraid.
  7. Do not defeat.
  8. Do not fight back.
  9. Do not surrender.
Namaste, fellow Uzupisians!

And who has the responsibilities/duties? Clearly no one in Užupis!

Bartenders, bakers, and chefs, be they vegan, vegetarian, or otherwise.

- Musical instrument repair people - must be good with jigsaws, tuning forks, and strings of all varieties.
- Canvas stretchers and paint mixers (and artistic assistants in general)
- Models and Muses! Good models and muses are always in demand in artist colonies; I am actually in the market for one myself these days for my painting.
- Massage artists - nothing better when you are working on the latest large-scale mural - imagine how Michelangelo felt after a long day on the scaffolding at the Sistine Chapel
- Tarot card readers
and a few other specialities I could mention, but maybe save for the weekend.
