To round out the lists: this one is great - some of the nicest places in the world listed here. Desolate, mysterious, unlikely to have Internet service... :D
Beyond looking at nations as more or less cohesive political and economic units, there are also numerousuninhabited regions of the world; many fall within borders of nations and others do not have a national identity at all.

Antarctica
Antipodes Islands
Ashmore and Cartier Islands
Bajo Nuevo Bank
Baker Island
Balleny Islands
Much of interior Nunavut
Big Major Cay
Bouvet Island
Caroline Island
Clipperton Island
Devon Island
Elephant Island
Elobey Chico
Ernst Thälmann Island
Much of Inland Greenland
Gough Island
Hans Island
Harmil
Hashima Island
Hatutu
Heard Island and McDonald Islands
Much of Iceland, especially its highlands
The upper alpine zone and nival zone of the Himalaya (and most other high mountains).
Howland Island
Ilha da Queimada Grande
Jaco Island
Jarvis Island
Jong Batu
Kahoolawe Island
Kerguelen Islands
Kingman Reef
Mborokua
Minquiers and Ecréhous
Melville Island
Monomoy Island
Prince Edward Islands
Navassa Island
Nomans Land
Much of Northern Ontario
Paracel Islands
Palmyra Atoll
Redonda
Round Island
South Orkney Islands
Spratly Islands
Stirling Island
Much of Northern Siberia
Siwalik (outermost Himalayan foothills) and surrounding alluvial skirt Bhabhar in India, Pakistan, Nepal and Bhutan, apparently due to endemic malaria and droughty soils.
St Kilda
Tetepare Island
Tibet's upper alpine zone and nival zone.
Tinakula
Tumucumaque National Park in northwest Brazil

Promoting the outposts.

Preparing for the accession of Hutt River and other principalities, micro, milli, and nano-nations.

A motion was made for their inclusion on this thread by ppauper and was seconded by Traden4Alpha on June 16, 2017.

See reference thread: hutt river

The implementation will take a few days.

Quick and dirty, but the best way for the moment - lots of details from Wiki here:

List of Micronations

Unrepresented Nations and People's Organizations (UNPO)

Test your knowledge - what is Savoy?

Where is Talysh?

What is the means of exchange in Filettino?

Which micronation was established as a statement on the right to same-sex marriage?

Their stamps are beautiful and remind me of the Griffin and Sabine trilogy.

There should be a Vegan group or two somewhere...

Image

UNPO Map

The diversity of reasons for their founding and how they have evolved is fascinating.  Enjoy!

Some related reading: State of the World's Indigenous Peoples - (SOWIP) 2009 first edition

"...The State of the World’s Indigenous Peoples was published in 2009 and its major focus was on: Poverty and Well-being; Culture; Environment; Contemporary Education;Health; Human Rights and Emerging Issues. The report was well received and according to press reports, the publication revealed alarming statistics on indigenous peoples’ poverty, health, education, employment, human rights, the environment and more. This was the first United Nations publication and provided much needed information on the status of indigenous peoples throughout the world."

Hehe - well, yesterday I bought two vegan cookbooks - both excellent and also a sushi book, but have to be careful there.  Fresh fish, watch out for species that hold onto mercury etc.

Is the world still relatively clean in some places?  Not near the Bikini Atoll, I guess. But I will keep searching!

Elgaland-Vargaland: A conceptual art project by two Swedish artists, which defines itself as the borders of all nations

that's very one-dimensional

I can't eat whale anymore because of Sellafield. I also refuse to eat Carlingford oysters.

Illusions of grandeur. Another sect.
