Monsanto weed killer can 'probably' cause cancer: World Health Organization

I grew up on a farm, as a child and teenager I used to work at least half of my summer holidays in the fields together with other people my age manually removing weeds. Even a small farm could easily employe 10 teenagers for weed control (manually pulling them out of the ground) during the summer. There was always easy for teenagers to get summer jobs on the farms. We spent the summer outdoor working (and having a lot of fun too). Now the farmer uses roundup and the teenagers spend half their summer holiday on Facebook and the other half on snapchat and instagram. Is this progress?

I think Roundup discussion should be about understanding risk? When WHO says probably can cause cancer, then even if they could be dead wrong should we not withdraw Glyphosate until much more research is done? There exist simple well proven ways (that have been used for centuries) to remove weeds that is much less risky (and that would help employ people in many European countries with high unemployment)!I am suggesting summer jobs for teenager manually pulling weed out of the ground (as part of the solution combined with mechanics)! I am sorry there is no App for that (yet) !!

All of the weed control options carry risk and it's quite possible that this herbicide is the lowest risk option. Glyphosate seems to be the least expensive or most effective weed control strategy (otherwise farmers would do something else). Anything that increases the cost (or reduces the yields) of agricultural products would harm the poor and increase the chance of civil unrest (e.g., high food prices are the likely root cause for the Arab Spring riots) Worse, given that agricultural work has one of the highest death rates of any occupation, increasing the labor on the farm (especially if it involves inexperienced teenagers having fun) would almost certainly increase the total number of deaths and especially increase the number of years of life lost (killing a teenager is much worse than giving an old person cancer). The precautionary principle only makes sense if the existing methods have no risks or downsides. Moreover, in this case, there's decades of experience with the product so that most of the risks are well understood and controlled. Even if it does cause cancer, the rate of incidence must be quite low.

I just googled "roundup" by curiosity. It doesn't seem harmful at a glance.

This whole thing is very disturbing, though not surprising, and I don't think that anyone who cares about health and the environment would believe Monsanto anyway. The more publicity that comes out, the greater the public pressure will become. But that is not direct pressure (in the way the government to business would be, for example) and it takes a long time to make a significant change through public opinion and action. In international environmental regulation, one "success story" that is discussed at length in law schools is the ozone layer/CFC battle from the 1970s-80s. Eventually the science was so compelling that they had to ban CFCs. A good book on this: Ozone Diplomacy: New Directions in Safeguarding the Planet - Richard Elliot Benedick, but the delays due to endless political wrangling and smear campaigns against some scientists make it even more complicated and dangerous (in terms of too little too late) than it needs to be.In spite of feeling quite concerned about all this, the video is kind of funny - not just his getting caught making a ridiculous claim ("You can drink a whole quart of it and it won't hurt you.") But also his supporting argument:~ "People often try to commit suicide by drinking glyphosate and it just doesn't work."Ah, I see, so it must be safe then.Logic worthy of the OT Hall of Fame. ** For people not familiar with that CFC debate, here is the outcome:UNEP Montreal Protocol"The Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer was designed to reduce the production and consumption of ozone depleting substances in order to reduce their abundance in the atmosphere, and thereby protect the earth's fragile ozone Layer. The original Montreal Protocol was agreed on 16 September 1987 and entered into force on 1 January 1989."There have been a significant number of amendments, adjustments, and decisions since then - this history is all outlined on the UNEP website.
