We used to take a pet sitting company (they usually came for an hour a day and also stayed overnight once or twice a week; always sent photos from their visits). Now we have several neighbours who live with their own cats or simply love cats. We look after each other's pets or - if there's no pet to return the favour - I insist on paying them (especially if it's a young person) and bring them presents. That works much better for the cats and thus ourselves
A hotel would be the last resort (nomen omen). I've read that changing the environment generated a lot of stress for pets in such situations.
I know that they often give tranquillisers to pets for travel (my ferret slept the whole day - which is about 25% longer than usual - when I was bringing her to London), but otherwise you'd need to ask your vet. I personally doubt it's safe and good for their health. Maybe ask a befriended neighbour or try finding some recommended petsitter? If you lived in London, I would come and take care of them
