I don't want to be too insulting to Russians on the glorious Victory Day, but given recent evidence is it possible that 27 million died because, well, Russians are just not very good at wars?

There is certainly that, but we should probably also get past this notion that we don’t have an issue with the Russian people, only Putin. It is ordinary Russian people: sons, brothers and, occasionally, fathers who torture opposition soldiers, kill civilians, and rape women, girls, and boys. That is not Putin. He may of course expect it and applaud it, but he is not the one doing it. Free will may have a low standing in a country that has never been “free”, but it is also not a totally alien concept.

I've only ever met one nice Russian. All the others were unpleasant. But they probably weren't rapists. So I cannot imagine what the worst are like.

The secret is in the Russian language. Imagine a simple sentence: All Russians want is peace. Now translate it into Russian: Все, чего хотят русские, это мир, which also means: All Russians want is the whole world. The Russian word мир (mir) means both: peace and world. They will fight for peace untlil they get the whole world. They cannot distinguish.

I know and have known several pleasant Russians.
Most who migrated late in life are fairly fixed in their thinking -- mostly that Russian culture is better, except that anything even the least suggestive of communism is unacceptably horrible.
But other than that, quite agreeable.
