Unless you're certain what you want to do the MBA is a better choice. You get a broad (but shallow) knowledge of a number of different areas that will serve as a "door opener" for a whole variety of jobs. What you wont get is any sort of deep understanding - btu then is that an appropriate goal if you're not sure what you want to come next?

The main value of the MBA s breadth of content and the diversity of classmates you will meet and have in your rolodex for years to come. It is the degree for those who want to manage people and so be able to speak generally to technical people, clients, shareholders, etc. An MBA is also important if the finance work you want to do includes underwriting, M&A banking, or more general non-quantitative finance. If you know you want to work in a bank's risk management department or do anything seriously quantitative, something like an MFE is necessary and the MBA probably will not help much. Even MBAs from Chicago are not as "hardcore" in the quantitative basics as a specialized program.

MFE all the way. The Berkeley program is a good blend between MBA and PhD level. Go for it.
