I have not been in the industry for too long, and in current times the only way to get decent interviews seems to be through personal contacts rather than HH. Does anyone have any ideas how to speed up the networking ? As I am facing the prospect of being laid off, I might have some time to devote to that.Any advice would be appreciated.

Find some conferences or seminars fast and go to them. For the future job searches, have built a network through seminars, conferences, organizations [e.g. depending on interest, Amer. Finance Asso., SIAM, Econometric Society, Bachelier, computing assoc., IFORMS, etc.]. Profs won't initially do as much good as industry people but both groups know each other and can expand your reach and they attend many of the same conferences and seminars.
