let me give you young people a tip about work: it's not worth it

Not sure who the right guy is, but it would seem to me he's a scientist of some sort. If so, then they both keep doing what they used to do during their "working" life.

QuoteAt an annual rally of his Conservative Party, Osborne said Britain's coalition government would introduce a new welfare cap to make sure families in which both parents are unemployed do not receive more in benefits than an average family earn in wagesDon't sweat it, introduce is a long way from pass. And we are not even to introduce yet.

QuoteOriginally posted by: mynetselfAfter a life of work, now you're left with doing nothing but feel sorry for yourself. that's precisely my point. Instead of spending your life working, you should put your job in perspective -- it's only job. Then you need to cultivate actively a serious outside pursuit, like painting or hunting or charity so, when you are laid off or fire or retired, you don't go directly to the grave.

QuoteOriginally posted by: mynetselfWhat I don't get is what's the hype about not working all about? If you wouldn't work, what would you do? Everyone seems to have an answer to that, like travel, party all the time, just be lazy and what not. But I think that's bollocks. Just have a look at those who really don't have to work, like Paris Hilton. She's so bored with everything that has nothing better to do than playing the public slut and then pretending like she's sorry and kinda apologize to her "fans". And even she decided she'll start doing something.Or look at retired people. I'm willing to bet that 95%+ are bordering on depression. After a life of work, now you're left with doing nothing but feel sorry for yourself. Depression? Go figure. I'll take stress and "boss hatred" over depression any time. And the few that are not depressed teach youngsters about life on online forums. (Farmer, no offense, but that's how fun and easy not working for you seems to be. Are you sure it's that "fun"???) One of the reasons why governments want unemployment levels low is not so everyone will have their own money and be happy, but more because loads of people that do nothing actually cause trouble! No, I'm not a workaholic or anything like that, but seriously people, if you were not working, what the hell would you do? Give me one single convincing answer that will make me believe that by not working you could avoid serious boredom and depression and I'll be happy.Dude the hype is not about not working but about working hard on things that you like to do and still make an affluent living out of it.

80-90% of jobs in Finance below MD level are about programming and BS accounting. What's so glamrous about sitting in a cubicle and doing number cruching day in day out.The glamaor is not in the work but in the money and things that you can do with that.Anybody is free to correct me if I am wrong here.

If people are really passionate about intellectual stimulation as they appear to claim, then there is no place better than academia.

Its not evil its how things work.

QuoteOriginally posted by: LTrainI work because zeros in the checkbook give me a hard-on! there are much easier ways to get an erection that doesn't not involve wasting your life away inside a tall building 10-14 hours per day. Try viagra, for example.

Teach them how to sign up for food stamps and college grants. you can work those college fellowships until retirement age. Go through the entire systems of double major bachelors degree, a couple of masters, MBA, MFE, MFA, med school, law school, PhD1, PhD2, etc etc. Pretty soon, you qualify for social security and a waiver on your student loans because you reach retirement age.
