Choice of first job

October 30th, 2010, 10:57 am

Hey Guys,I'm in London having just finished an MFE and am interning at a risk vendor which is due to finish shortly. I have the following options:1) Stay in the current company setting up a new client services desk - which means dealing with the middle office of banks/hedge funds/asset managers with day to day questions such as why is my VaR so big? What model are you using for this derivative? How do I set up a username/password, etc. I think there would be some (not sure how much) interesting anayltics.2) Move to a similar company but they implement trading systems as well as just risk management, on the hedge fund "consulting" team. Probably more going out to see clients and travelling than I would get in my current company, but just focus on hedge funds.3) Move to birmignham to be in an energy company modelling different risks in their quant team. Looking at wierd, unhedgeable risks. The interview was very heavy on stochastics/MC.Any ideas? Would any limit my options for future? I know its not exactly choosing between Deutch and BarCap or any big names but I'm having difficulty deciding. The more quant route in energy or in risk software................

3) sounds the most interesting to me, followed by 2). I would avoid 1) like the plague.

Good grief what a dilemma! If you haven't been i would suggest a visit before you rush into anything. It really is the most awful place, although it is nearly 20 years since i was last there.Just remember that if someone says 'Yow', they mean 'you'

Depends what you are interested in. Most people's points here are going to be what they would want to do in your position. Do you want to look at weird risks and do heavy Stocastic / MC stuff? Or does the client side piece attact you more. What is it that drives YOU.I would agree with all comments on Brum. I know some people love it, others don't. I have only seen 3 hot women in Birmingham and I have quite a few friends there so been there regularly, but I have heard it has improved in recent years.
