From (day)trader to quant-trader

December 22nd, 2011, 11:22 am

Are there possibilities for quantitative trading roles in companies such as Jane Street, Optiver or even hedge funds for people with experience in non-quantitative daytrading? I (liberal arts background) am thinking of studying for a degree in financial math/quantitative finance and looking for a quantitative trading job afterwards. Reason: Most of us honest daytraders get killed by the algorithms nowadays and I always found the quantitative aspects most interesting. Co-integration, Black & Scholes and that type of stuff. Interesting is that many of those items I understand intuitively from years looking at the market, without really having studied for them.Any thoughts/advice?
