2nd Tier / 3rd Tier Firms?

December 26th, 2011, 8:16 am

hi all, i'm getting a PhD in physics from UC Berkeley sometime next year, and i'm trying to get a summer 2012 internship as a quant. i also have an undergrad degree in CompSci from Brown U.I've sent out all my applications to the cream of the crop ( JSC, GETCO, Citadel, etc. ) but i want to hedge my bets. what are some 2nd / 3rd tier hedge funds or quant funds that are still good , BUT aren't the #1 best in the universe & thus might be easier to get into?thanks, s

2nd Tier / 3rd Tier Firms?

I've met some very talented quant traders from many of the "tier 2" Chicago MM shops (ex. wolverine, infinium, belvedere, etc.). I can't speak for the quality of their training programs or their structure for quant dev/ pure quant positions, but they are probably worth your time to look into. Good luck to you.

There are several thousand hedge funds in the NYC area, and trying to sort them into "tier" is like trying to sort food trucks into tiers, it doesn't work that way. Also you really should look at HH's. A lot of hedge funds are "don't call us, we'll call you" types that go through headhunters.
