Calypso or Murex?

October 17th, 2012, 8:59 pm

Anyone can tell me which of the above systems is the better one to get experience in and also re job prospects?I've been given job opportunities in both, one working on Calypso and the other on Murex.

I would say Murex but I strongly recommend to give more weight to other aspects of the job (unless you plan to be a Murex/ Calypso expert).

I would say Murex too, they seem to be a dominant player in their market. Prepare yourself to be hated by most people in the banking sector though, Murex is a stinking pile of crap.

Would avoid pinning your career to single piece of software personally. It can mean that you get nice contracts later on when you are an expert.. But you have an unhedgable risk., if the firm goes under, the software falls out of favour you are left in the wind. Fine for an initial job, but look to diversify.

There is also another issue which you should keep in mind if you decide to become a Murex contractor: the company may blacklist you if you annoy them. Murex unofficially vets the contractors banks hire to work on their system, and if they say you're no good, it's unlikely that the bank manager would decide to hire you (unless you're their nephew). I've been told that by a Murex contractor. I don't know about Calypso, but would not be surprised if the situation weren't similar.

Murex got 2013 the risk award as well. I have not worked on the system BUt would like to know why is hated the most!!

Murex is _great_ with regards to quantitative modeling / pricing / risk. As an innovative and fast developing product there are inevitably details which are buggy, but name a software without bugs. Even the small, specialized quant libraries have their problems here and there ... and why does everybody use it when it is so bad ?

No, no, no. Murex IS crap. Been there, seen that, got the scars.RIsk awards just prove how influential the company is. They have no relation to the quality of the product. The number of clients is just the effectiveness of their salesforce, and another example of the fad for "outsourcing".
