Exactly! It's all downhill.

Well then what about using QF modeling techniques on human behavior?

What if every financial instrument is really a derivative who's underlying is humanity?
Do we have a BS of human behaviour? A single formula describing rigorously the most important factors of human behaviour? If not it's carving of the air.
Single formula? LOL!  Only children need things reduced to a single formula.
And traders.

I have been skimming a lot of quant finance journals recently and with a few exceptions I cannot see that much innovation these days. Are we in a long period with little new going on, or are we on the door steps of a new innovative period? The finical markets used to be like a jungle with lots of exotic quant research going on all the time!

yes traders like simple sling shot formulas!

all quants moved into ML and FinTech? only the traders left in the Jungle, to die (or get super rich) when machines think they are taking over!

Is it reasonable to assume that there is not that much innovation as there is not much in terms of new products? The structured products investment and trading grinder to a halt in 2008/'09 and most advances in Quant trading these days are done with AI approaches (=Black Box = no material for papers). So it's not that surprising that there's not much new is going on in quant research, no?

It's seems to be a bit like
An engineer, a mathematician, and a computer programmer are driving down the road when the car they are in gets a flat tire.  The engineer says that they should buy a new car.  The mathematician says they should sell the old tire and buy a new one.  The computer programmer says they should drive the car around the block and see if the tire fixes itself.

luckily for them, the silent trader (their driver) has already ordered 3 new cars and an airplane to drop them now! (puhhh academics)  (and yes naturally electric cars, low emission)

smaller money units is not over yet, smallest Bitcoin is 1 Satoshi 10^-8 (1 SAT).

However I predict there is an absolute smallest money unit (even for digital/electronic money) based on the Launder limit and the Planck scale.

Assuming minimum money unit must be represented by at least 1 bit, then the money notional smallest unit cannot be below the energy price of energy used to store (erase) one bit, and in the very limit the minimum energy is directly linked to the Planck constant, so a minimum money unit anywhere in the universe is linked to the Planck constant.

The Absolute Smallest Possible Money Unit! When Money Crashes into the Laws of Physics

working paper, will write a separate physics papers on Launder limit and the Planck scale, actually standard physics without modifications is incompatible with Planck scale limit.

Witty article! Thanks for sharing.

"For electronic money, there is a similar option: if the energy value of the bits used to store the smallest money units is above the notional value of that money unit, then there is an arbitrage. Get the money, take it out as energy, and sell the energy."

Hvordan er det mulig? Can I heat up water by reading your article to the kettle? I tried - it didn't work ;-P Information is entropy, not energy. Energy is what you need to change the entropy of the system, e.g. arrange bits in a meaningful way, so that they represent information. Any sort of changes to the bits will require only more energy (that's in the case of non-volatile memories like old good HDDs, SSDs, flash sticks, etc.; in the case of the volatile ones, such as RAM, you actually need energy to support the information - once you cut off the power, it's gone).
The article [5] (about the minimum energy required to erase a bit) has a short intro about the problem of constructing energy efficient computational devices (every computation amount to erasure, because you always overwrite something that's been there before).
