a desk making $40m+ a year?

i mean net trading profit. is that an extraordinary result?

Depends what the product and strategy is. But I would say yes extraordinary as it is pretty low.

It's all relative depends on the size of the organisation, desk etc... $40m is our desk target for the year but would be peanuts for some of the bigger banks

Depends on the nature of the desk, is it "true" prop trading or does it benefit from internal order flow volume? Also, what is the nature of the strategy's return profile? If the desk lost $100mln in the bad years and makes $40 mln in the good years, then there's not much to brag about. Also, make sure to also think about the strategy in terms of percent returns or most banks have return on economic capital figures.
