Re: EU-UK Trade Discussions 2020

Late last week Downing Street briefed journalists that there was growing optimism about progress in the future relationship negotiations, with just weeks of talks remaining.

It is understood that during informal discussions the UK's chief negotiator David Frost pushed his opposite number Michel Barnier for the process to enter, as soon as possible, the so-called tunnel, the final period of sealed negotiations preceding a future relationship treaty.
However, two senior sources have told RTÉ News that Mr Barnier refused to agree to such an intensification for two reasons.

First, the EU believes the UK has still not made sufficient concessions on the so-called level playing field, including the question of state aid, and fisheries.

Secondly, Brussels believes the deadline is the end of October, not 14 October, the deadline that British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has set, which is when EU leaders will meet for a summit.

I think there is one more point.

Third (or thirdly), BJ has demonstrated his ability and willingness to sign an agreement and then, within months, declare that he didn’t understand it and unilaterally renege on it.

But that is only uttered sotto voce in the corridoors of power.

I think my views on the chlorinated chickens have been covered before (brief recap - I cannot get excited about them, and they taste OK), but the difference here is that the EU probably doesn’t need to accept a one-sided deal favoring the US.

We don't have to either! (Modulo the consequences.)

If it's deep-fried, then I don't see any problems.
Anyways, we don't eat chicken any more.
The old days were better; go to uncle's farm, pick out a chicken, take it home, pluck it, take out the entrails, stuff it and put in oven to roast,
And for the kids; pull on tendons for claw animation.

Wait - at which point during this process did the bird perish? Or did your uncle provide a line-up of, should we say, stunned chickens?

You're warm. Well, P(al)PF training was handy.
Well, it was Christmas time and he had a lot of orders. Let's say it was not a stun gun. Mostly a mano.

I reread that. Just to be clear it's the hanging, drawing and quartering that is horrible. Not Mel Gibson movies. His Hamlet is one of the best.

Awful, indeed. I was about 12; and the yard was full of headless chickens running around the yard. Bumping into each other.

That brings us on to the case of Miracle Mike .. headless chicken who lived for 18 months and earned $4500 per month (50K in today's money).

Foul play suspected.

That is one history (and anatomy) lesson that I’d be happy to unlearn! There is a Brexit metaphor in there somewhere, I’m sure.
