In a rambling and at times incoherent rant on global trade, the president claimed international companies would “come to Ohio and build a plant” if he imposed tariffs.
“When we make a car and send it to China they charge us a 25 per cent tax,” he said: “When they make a car and send it to us, we charge them essentially nothing, it’s two-and-a-half per cent but basically they don’t pay it.
“So they pay, think of it, they pay two-and-a-half per cent, meaning nothing, and we pay 25 per cent and on top of it, they don’t want our cars, that’s even worse.

“So what they do is they say is ‘no, no, we don’t want your cars’ but they tell General Motors ‘build the plant in China’.

despite what the so-called Independent falsely claims, that was neither incoherent nor a rant.
President Trump has gone right to the heart of the issue. Under the Bushes, Clinton, and Obama, China was paying close-to-zero tariffs on goods shipped to the US while the US had to pay swingeing tariffs on goods shipped to China.
President Trump is offering countries free access to the US market if the US gets free access to their market in return.

If country X pays a 2.5% tariff to sell in the US but the US pays a 25% tariff to sell in country X, there's already a trade war going on.

A new poll in the tri-state area of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut found that 91.6% of the Orthodox Jewish community supports President Donald Trump.

It’s probably close to the reverse, but maybe more like 85-15.

So, Trump's first supporter in Congress, Chris Collins, appears to be even more stupid and crooked than his campaign chair, Paul Manafort, and his trusty (if not trustworthy) side-kick, Rick Gates. Which is pretty impressive, but certainly fits a pattern. Using your own phone to repeatedly pass on material non-public information about a company whose board you are on, to a family member, who then trades on that information, is about as boneheaded as you can get. No wonder he supports Trump!

we had a thread a while back on insider trading by Congress,
why are politicians so good at investing their own money and so bad at investing our tax dollars ?

Bill filed to prohibit congressional insider trading
Members of Congress and their staffs would be prohibited from using insider legislative information for investment purposes under legislation filed Tuesday in the wake of a CBS News "60 Minutes" report.
On Sunday, "60 Minutes" aired a report highlighting instances in which congressional officials reportedly bought stocks around the same time Congress was discussing legislation affecting those companies or industries.
The show looked at the investments of various lawmakers -- including House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, House Speaker John Boehner and Republican Rep. Spencer Bachus of Alabama.

you might recall that Princess Nancy denounced that 60 Minutes show as a "right wing smear".The bill is sponsored by trackstar's senator, RINO scott brown
The bill filed Tuesday by Massachusetts Republican Sen. Scott Brown would make it illegal for elected congressional officials, their staffs and executive branch employees to use information about pending bills that's not available to the general public in making investment decisions. It would also forbid them from making such information public for personal gain.

the point would be that pretty well the whole of congress seems to be involved in insider trading. Congress outperforms the rest of us by 6% a year.
I don't have an issue with prosecuting members of congress for insider trading. What I do have an issue with is selective prosecution: if they're all doing it (which seems to be pretty much the case) prosecute them all.  Don't pick one you don't like and proscute him and give the others a free ride.

It's the same with Manafort. The Podestas, John (Hillary's campaign manager) and Tony, and Tad Devine (who worked for Bernie) did the exact same thing as Manafort. Manafort was prosecuted and the others were given immunity in exchange for testimony against Manafort. Selective prosecution.

If you think Manafort is "stupid and crooked," then you must also think that John and Tony Podesta and Tad Devine, who all did the exact same thing, are equally "stupid and crooked." Or are they smart, because they know as democrats they can do whatever they want and never be called to account?

Does anyone else find it a bit odd that the FIRST GOP lawmaker to Endorse @POTUS Trump for President is arrested today by Deep State FBI? @RepChrisCollins …It’s Almost as if the Shadow Govt. has something against Trump supporters?

Nancy Pelosi, who was worth 100 MILLION in 2015 said on Wednesday:
The charges against Congressman Collins show the rampant culture of corruption and self-enrichment among Republicans in Washington today. The Ethics Committee must accelerate its own investigation into Congressman Collins’ illegal abuse of the public trust.

Anyone care to speculate how Nancy Pelosi came to be worth $100 million on a relatively modest salary?

house minority leader, was speaker of the house when dems held the house
bearish mentioned that the first congressman to back trump has been charged with insider trading, and my response was that this was selective prosecution since just about all of congress seems to be involved in insider trading (congress gets a 6% higher annual return than the average investor). Nancy Pelosi made some comments about the trump-supporting congressman, and I mentioned that Nancy Pelosi was worth $100M in 2015 and wondered out loud how she had got so wealthy on a fairly modest income.

Whenever anybody here calls out one of those people ppauper adores for bad behavior (usually illegal, but occasionally merely offensive), his retort is usually long and always consists of telling speculative stories about how some Democrat once did something worse. It is normally a Clinton or close associate, although the other usual suspects are Obama, Pelosi and Warren (who he will, for maximal derogatory racist effect, refer to as Pocahontas).

In case Gamal doesn't know, Senator Warren pretended to be part Native American so that she could qualify as a minority which helped her get a job at Harvard
Even her party leadership seem to have given up on that lie, in that they said that we could elect the first Native American female members of Congress this fall. Meaning that there isn't one at the moment
