Why did Trump nominate a neocon for this position?

You know he is a brilliant self-made business man who is a great judge of people and who will only hire the best and brightest into his government. He said so himself, at least a few thousand times during the campaign. So you figure he would have most of his original hires with him after a twenty or so months, right?

I'll quote from Pat Buchanan's book on the Nixon Admininstration:
Nixon had an eye for talent and wanted the best, whether they had been for him or not.

The danger if you only hire people who agree with you 100% is groupthink.

Two years as UN ambassador is plenty long enough

And, in fairness to her, it's time to cash in.

I admire you. You can find an answer to every question. You should replace Ms Haley at the UN.

His stock of answers outnumbers the questions by orders of magnitude. And when the questions get to him, the answers grow longer.

anyhoo, when Rex Tillerson, who was a Romneyite, was made secretary of state, it seemed to be understood that he was there on a fairly short-term basis to restructure the bloated State Department, which he did spectacularly well. I suspect that Nikki Haley was hoping to get State when Tillerson moved on, but Mike Pompeo got the nod, and Mr Pompeo has done such an outstanding job, especially with North Korea, that it looks like he will be in that position for quite a while. So there's no chance of a promotion for Nikki Haley any time soon. And that's why she's moving on.

I agree. Nixon got the Watergate A-Team: Gordon Liddy, H.R. Halderman, James McCord. I remember it like yesterday. It was on US TV all day..

In this case the groupthink < 100%.

Mushroom boy is at it again tonight, blaming the stock market drop on the Fed. "I think the Fed has gone crazy!" was his rallying cry in Pennsylvania this afternoon. Never mind his trade policies...

Of course, there is also the small matter of doing an election campaign in Erie (so suitably named) while the country is being hit by the third strongest hurricane to make landfall in recorded history. But he has promised to make a campaign appearance in Florida next week. Assuming they can find a golf course that is playable.

U.S. stock index futures recovered most of their losses on Thursday after the release of weaker-than-expected inflation data.

the president has a point, of course.
Why is the Fed raising rates, and trying to kill growth, if there is no inflation.

agreed, we need to downsize the Federal government.

Raising rates makes the deficit worse, because we have to pay interest on all the debt accumulated under past presidents.
For most of Obama's presidency, the fed funds rate was 0 to 0.25% (it's a range). At the moment, it is 2.0 to 2.25%.
