I just read the bottom of that Twitter justification. It says:

"Plans for future armed protests have already begun proliferating on and off-Twitter, including a proposed secondary attack on the US Capitol and state capitol buildings on January 17, 2021."

You cannot get a decent cup of tea in the US, that's the root of all this.

Paul, it was long before our respective times but we had a little tea party way back when which caused all kinds of commotion.   I think tea is the least of our worries.

The Twitter and Facebook bans represent free speech and the first amendment in practice. They have no obligation to carry his toxic drivel and lies. In fact, had he succeeded in ramming his favorite piece of legislation through with the defense appropriation bill (the one where his veto was overridden) they would have been legally, and possibly criminally, liable for doing so. Imagine Weibo blocking Xi Jinping from posting. It would not end well...

I’ve said I’m all in favor of those two being closed down, by their owners.

I am saying that they a) have their own political leanings and b) they are making things worse. I don’t know whether a) and b) are linked.

But keep it simple, do you think it’s ok for Twitter to announce when and where the next “event” will take place?

I agree it’s unnecessary at best and damaging at worst to aid and abet the organizers of the next attack. But I don’t think that shutting down Trump’s direct communication channel to 80 million people for a critical week or two is making things worse. The coverage of the alternative pathways is much more limited, although admittedly still likely to reach most of those prone to violence on his behalf.

Amazon likely deserves their lawsuit (haven't read it); the app store pulls by Apple and Google are troubling, too, given the combined smartphone monopoly power of those two. We'll learn how independent the Biden DOJ is on that one.

I don’t think it of it so much as Democratic and Republican as people who are in favor of democracy and government guidelines to try to reduce the Covid carnage and those who are against. Most other issues kind of pale at the moment (well, except for in England, where they finally threw off the yokes of tyranny from Brussels).

I don’t assert causality here, it’s just that Democrats tend to be more educated and drawn to the population centers where buses and subways are more efficient than cars. Republicans live in places like Wyoming, South Dakota and Orange County, CA.

So I had a chance to listen to most of the incitement speech today, and it was really worse than what has generally been reported in the media. By the time of the inauguration we may have 30,000 National Guard soldiers in place, which may or may not be enough to defend against Trump’s forces. It should be enough if they go for total annihilation. Anything else would constitute appeasement.
